Why not? WinRT is just COM under the hood, and COM is just Win32 under the hood.

  • Large chunks of Win32 (including GDI/USER32) aren't available from WinRT
  • There's no messages
  • The application lifecycle model is completely different
  • Other restrictions such as access to the filesystem are in place
