Microsoft invested 1B to assure that Nokia would drop Meego for smart phones and locked in W7P in Europe.

Nokia lost QT, Meego and some serious market confidence.

Nokia's market cap was around 31B, and today they lost nearly 15% of their market value.

+ 1B from Microsoft

- a bunch of QT developers

- the Meego handset alliance

and now minus ~4.5 Billion dollars

Net worth of the W7P deal appears to be (-3.5 Billion)

They should have forced Microsoft to acquire them at the current PPS. Now they're just F'd like RIM.

This deal told the world that Symbian phones including their new 12MP camera phones are worthless. They're going on eBay for a hundred bucks unlocked. By the time W7P Nokia phones get out to the general public the unified Ice Cream release will be out and open sourced back into the git trunk(and on kernel.org).

The little sh1t manufacturers in China will have it on their aPads and $49 Huawei smart phones before Nokia knows what hit them.

Nokia stock was poor way before the Microsoft deal. That was because Nokia phones had cheap and shoddy software, that let the good hardware down.

You may want to invest some of your bags of money in a trip to an Opticians. They do wonders nowadays for those with with poor vision.

Another billion dollars disappears at Nokia, and it only took a couple hours. They lost another 6%+ this morning.

I want to add that Microsoft must have been relieved when Google didn't release a compilable version of Honeycomb to boost a few vendors in the OHA.

They only took a break. When Ice Cream Sandwich comes out, it will be back in the git master and every Tom Dick and Harry on the Asian continent will have it on a sub $100 device and in shipping containers at port.

Sure, let's evaluate the Nokia deal before it is even acted upon, because that makes sense... or does it?

A proper comparison of the deal can only be made after Nokia releases actual WP7 hardware and contributes to the WP7 ecosystem, because that's what the deal was all about. Wouldn't it make more sense to see how Nokia is doing a year or two after they release WP7 handsets? Wouldn't it make more sense to see how the customers react to the Nokia WP7 devices? Wouldn't it make more sense to see what sort of impact Nokias service will have on the WP7 OS?

But then again, I wouldn't expect you to follow any sort of logical reasoning.

It does because a huge part of the game is perception and speculation and the speculators have done the due diligence and are speculating away from Nokia/Microsoft futures. These are accredited institutional investors and they just moved six billion plus dollars out of the outcome of the deal.

These were not shorts but long term placements that have been pulled as an emergency.

The outcome of the deal is heavily effected by perception and speculation and they have been perceived to make a very bad strategic move. It's very easy to lose 6 billion dollars. It's very hard to make it back.

Thinking that this won't trickle down to the consumer at Best Buy is nothing more than denial.

This isn't 20 years ago. People can read about it ..... on their Android phones.

@beerinbelgium:You seem to be trying to attribute Nokia's problems to the Microsoft deal. Nokia's problems started way before that.

Nokia CEO said "Jumping off the buring platform"...... He already said they are on the flaming platform before the WinPh7 deal. Kinda no brainer especially they don't have any WinPh7 out yet to turn it around.

It is true that Nokia already lost their edge as the technology innovator. They are certainly down scaling from the perspective of investors since they outsourced their OS to WinPh7. Their stock will continue to fall until they start to sell WinPh7 and also need to prove that they can still be sucessful using outsourced OS.

They also announced that they will probably lose money this quarter, IIRC.

When your CEO comes out and says that everything the company has been doing and everything that was planned for the next five years has been a collosal waste of time and money, you kind of expect to lose rather a lot of shareholder confidence.

Nokia either suceed with their new direction or fail in a big way, but moving away from trying to develop a dead platform was something they needed to do. They'd be where they are now regardless of whether they'd announced phones based on Android, WP7 or even iOS. Whether their decision is the right one or not remains to be seen.
