It's insane how floppies where just wide open. You could actually touch the magnetic part Smiley
We used to use a hole puncher to make 5.25" floppies double sided for our Commodore 1541 drive. At least the audio cassettes we used in our VIC-20 Dataset where protected in a hard plastic case.

I don't think I've ever seen an 8" floppy though.
