I think they did it so that details wouldn't leak. Press would see something about MS working on Surface and think it was an update to a niche table computer product.

Surface seems more like a theme than one particular form factor; but they are pretty radically different in terms of size of course.

It appears to be a solid product judging from the keynote (apart from the demo failure at the beginning).

Indeed. I've never heard anything about how thick a Pixelsense panel is, but I'm sure that would have something to do with whether it would make sense in a tablet. As it is, I'm kind of bummed that the ARM tablet doesn't have an active digitizer.
