I chalk this up as another example of Microsoft trying to be like Apple with its iPad, iPad 2, New iPad (which has Retina Display), and iPad with Retina Display (not to be confused with the New iPad, which is know old but but also has Retina display).

The only difference is that Microsoft is tying the version of the hardware to the version of the OS rather than some arbitrary name. So when Windows Blue comes out, your old Surface Windows 8 Pro will become Surface Windows 8 Pro with Windows Blue.

Ugh.

The thing is, they haven't yet carved out a good part of the market for themselves to even begin to set in motion mechanisms for latching onto customers. Cycling a 10K with training wheels basically.

 

Oh, and I hate the name. MS thinks too long term, planning for the next wave of products and future integration (the name is to help distinguish products in the Surface family most likely). But, they should really care more about the products they're selling now and how to make them great sales.

Microsoft has always had the worst product naming of any company in the history of time.  Most of the products would be much better off to stick with the internal development names.

And it's not "Surface Windows 8 Pro", which is a lousy name on so many levels. Instead, it's only slightly better with the name "Surface with Windows 8 Pro" (http://www.microsoft.com/Surface/en-US/surface-with-windows-8-pro/home). This seems to indicate to the customer that we just have a Surface device. You can choose to have Windows RT on it (Surface with Windows RT) or Windows 8 Pro on it (Surface with Windows 8 Pro). Unfortunately, these aren't the same device, making the name rather bad. Surface and Surface Pro are better, as they give you an indication that the devices are different. The "with" part of the new naming is OK, and possibly needed, but not indicating there's a difference in the devices with the root name is simply bad. "Surface with Windows RT" and "Surface Pro with Windows 8" I think would have been fine (Do you have to spell out the SKU of Windows 8? If so, you'll need to pick some name that won't cause Pro to be specified twice in the name.).
