Hi niners!
As a couple of you might know I am working on a project called DataMarket at Microsoft. DataMarket is a store/repository for data. We have a huge amount of statistics data, weather data, real estate data, and much more. Subscribing to data is as easy as buying a book online. After you subscribed you can use Visual Studio (or any other environment) to create an application that interacts with the data. All with a couple of lines of code!

To celebrate our V1 launch we announced a contest!

Hmm, what will this mean for other, existing Microsoft web services APIs like MapPoint?

@W3bbo: I am not sure what it means for them. For us the plan is to be a marketplace for all data you would need to build applications or do analytics (e.g. in Excel).

Are you actively courting the public sector to get 'free' public domain datasets or is the focus just on commercial gain? (Only ask as I am ex Public sector myself and I know there is data in there screaming to get out but no public funds to facilitate!)

@Ian2: We are going after both. The marketplace right now is pretty balanced between public and commercial data. It's great to have both as both kinds of data sources are very interesting.
