Honestly, I am left a little nonplussed after a weekend of use with the new iPad 3. 

Can anyone tell me what else is better (other than the display resolution) as compared with the iPad 2? 

Damn, perhaps I am missing something?  Or is it just me?

On it's own, it's a basic mid-term upgrade. Whether it is worth it or not depends on what the developers do with the extra graphics power and the screen.  Looking at the keynote and the responses online, this upgrade seems to be mostly about getting the games developers onboard.

I don't understand this: it looks that they are moving away from product numbers and therefore versions (they are also not changing the look of the device). Doesn't this make your old product less old which would make buing a new one less compelling?

Personally I like the idea, but marketing wise, this sounds like suicide.

Humans cannot go without religion, there is a permanent longing to belong somewhere, to find your pack. And if these people feel they belong with the hip because they spend $900,- on a pad, I'm happy for them!

What I can do without, is the; "I have blown $900,- and I am not sure that's a good purchase so I'm going to make up for the lack of confidence I have in myself by placing me on a pedestal and look down on you" attitude.

They pulled some crazy stuff back then, and they are now paying the price.

All in all I don't think the improved iPad will raise the bar to a whole new level but that said IMO Microsoft & their OEMs will still need to undercut Apples price bar if their going to compete at least on the ARM side of the house for W8 tablets. After all, the iPad is still the shiniest thing in town...

Actually I've been to quite a few conferences in Las Vegas, and when I'm there I see people running everything from Windows7 to Macbooks to Ubuntu to Red-hat and even Backtrack Linux.

On what hardware?

I've seen a lot of Ubuntu on Macs and Windows on Macs under Parallels.

The backend server is a multi-dimensional database engine which some of you might have heard of--Essbase. The server has no native client for .NET. You have to develop in Java or C. There was absolutely no reason to see any sign of Windows or any other Microsoft product anywhere that day.

But here's the reality: Out of those 35 users in attendance, there was one Apple Macbook. All the other machines were running Windows. The speaker gave a presentation on a Windows 7 machine using Office 2010--not Open Office. The web solution in question wasn't running on port 80, so there was a firewall issue initially. The presenter's solution was to RDP directly into the server. Port 3389 was wide open. At Oracle. The server was Windows Server 2008. Let that sink in. This is Oracle's premier partner running Oracle's Fusion application stack not on Linux but on Windows Server.

There's more...The latter part of the workshop was hands-on and required attendees to actually use the web application. The firewall issue was finally resolved so everybody had an opportunity to use the application. The presenter said that we *had* to use Internet Explorer. It was "optimized" for IE.

I don't do it, but I can imagine that if you put your work code on your personal devices, your job will eventually cry out "you stoledz our code, you stoldz our code!" or something to that effect. I don't want that to be an issue. Usually their code is so @ss bad you'd have to pay somebody to use it anyway. Hence why it's a job.

Actually that isn't true for Windows PCs.  People buy them because their stuff works on it.  If they switched to a Mac then none of the software they already own would work on it.  They also keep the machines until they break.  Why do you think Microsoft still has to support an 11 year old operating system and still has people using IE6?

My reality can still apply to your statement you know. You don't own a MS OS from the day Jesus is born. The first purchase is typically done with ignorant assumptions and word of mouth.

Even myself is included. When I want to buy a PC. I honestly did not spend days in research comparing Win95 and Apple PC. I just asked my teacher and he said Apple PC is expensive and that's it, I didn't give any second thought on the matter. Windows owners are as clueless as Mac owners. This is something I realized triggered by your original quote. People constantly bashing iProduct owners being clueless, but, I find it less and less applicable. Honestly my loyalty to MS product is as blind as hardcore Apple fan. For one thing, I seldom have need to because Hong Kong is small (I seldom "go disconnected" for more than 1 hour), and there's all kinds of free/paid internet serive everywhere (Like i-center in MTR station, and all kinds of coffeeshop that provides you desktop computer for surfing internet). For the others, consider my current job requires me to sit in front of monitor 8 hours a day already, I'd rather have some time closing my eyes when going home.

You honestly think that anyone NEEDS to own an iProduct?  Really?  I have been writing software professionally for over 17 years now and I have never owned an iProduct and have no intention of ever buying one.  I buy MS products because they work for what I need plain and simple.  I need MS products because that is what pays my bills and puts a roof over my head.  I can't ever recall buying anything expensive and wondering why I just did it. 

Of course there are clueless people everywhere and will buy whatever people tell them to.  It doesn't matter the technology or the item.  It is just more of a religion with iProducts for some unknown reason.  If that floats your boat then great.  The economy thanks you.

It's actually not the same thing. If you were to say "It's in Queens, not NYC", you would be technically incorrect because Queens is a borough in the City of New York. I was making a point that Windows is still well-entrenched in the enterprise, and Beer started talking about how some school that's "hard to get into" never tested a projector with Windows because he thinks schools that are "hard to get into" don't use Windows.

Out of the tecchie folk people I know, almost everyone either uses Windows or Linux. Either Windows is too "commercial and restrictive" for them, in which case Macs are too and they default to Linux, or they need specialist tools to run on their machine, in which case Windows wins. I know lots of folk that dual-boot Windows and Linux (or Linux and Windows depending on your pov), but very few who use macs seriously in the technical world.

Nearly EVERY presentation I  watched on youtube, on ruby, python, go, about the cloud, by Google employees, by cloud companies, by web developers, etc. was on a mac. Did you know that a mac is unix? I guess i misunderstand what you mean when you say "technical world".  I guess you mean dotnet. 

To be on topic, i recall when the iPad was introduced, it was near unanimously greeted with "what, a huge iPhone? boring!", and I sometimes think people on this thread still feel that way. In any case, i'm indifferent to the iPad/iPhone as I am to WP7 or Windows in general. Still what i see folding before my eyes is miraculous. 3m ipads sold on the fisrt weekend.

Actually the conference I was thinking of was Black Hat USA. I hardly ever program in .NET because there isn't any support for it in the kernel (there isn't any cloud or ruby or python or web-languages there either, thank god). And no matter how much you try and spin it, OSX is not Linux.

So yeah, I guess you misunderstand what I mean when I say technical.

Never said OSX is linux, I said it's unix. 

I guess that yes, at Black Hat USA you would see mostly Windows and Linux. But from what I wrote above, it's the exception when it comes to conferences.

There isn't support for any language in the kernel. There isn't any support for glibc in the kernel. The kernel just exposes system calls so whatever compiles to op codes can access it. If you're talking about programming the kernel itself then there's only support for C with no standard libc.

Not that it matters at all.

If you have been to Black Hat the only explanation is you work in some kind of security related field because nobody goes to such an expensive conference as a hobbyist. Thank you for confirming my suspicions.

Well if you're going down that road, there isn't support for any language anywhere. Somebody has to write the STL after all. Windows has C and C++ in the kernel, and Linux and OSX have just plain C - and just because you have to call kalloc or ExAllocatePool instead of malloc, doesn't make it any less supported in ring0 land.

From reading the posts following this one, I think you meant "there isn't any .net in the kernel, or ruby or ...".

The CLR doesn't work in the kernel, hence you cannot use .NET.

Looks like its a definite improvement but not sure it would be worth upgrading from a 2 (unless you have plenty of disposable)

Probably ever. Microsoft are increasingly trying to push stuff out of the kernel and into SYSTEM user-mode processes. If a driver really wants the CLR it can always go and use the CLR in a user-mode-driver-framework.
