Direct access to the RIL unfortunately is too tempting for some ppl with malign intentions.

Many thanks for that - but I although I could see references to some phone tasks, I couldn't see any reference to the Radio Interface Layer. I'm interested in pulling out the various information: Cell ID, Cell Signal Strength, MNC, MCC, LAc, etc...

Not quite sure what "malign intentions" you are refering to- how could it be sensitive information?

If you contact Microsoft directly they might even grant you special access and allow you to use this if it's so crucial to your application.

I use the RIL info all the time on Android and BB (and old Windows Mobile), for various apps.

Oh well- guess that's another version of Windows Phone I won't bother with!

and if the apps are "not for the general public" then why not ask MS ?

as I see it they have not given out access to some parts of the phone to make it less of a problem for most apps to get tested and approved as "safe"   for "the general public"  that way they can deal with the special cases as they happen and not have to worry about most apps.

honestly i can see a lot of users who would freak out if any app could even get close to tracking them.... with out asking for the access to that data.

a  half a click might be way to close ....
