Coffeehouse - The adventure game renaissance

It seems we're on the verge of a revival of the venerable adventure game genre. Of course, companies like Telltale have already been successul with the new Sam & Max and Monkey Island games, as well as Back to the Future, but now we're really seeing a return of the once adventure game giants.

Of course, you probably already know about Tim Schafer's hugely successful kickstarter, but did you know that the Two Guys from Andromeda (writers of the Space Quest series) have reunited and are making a new space adventure (and they got Gary Owens as the narrator again )? And that Jane Jensen and Robert Holmes (of Gabriel Knight fame) are starting a new game studio? Or that Al Lowe is planning to remake Leisure Suit Larry for the modern age?

I'm looking forward to it, that's for sure.

Coffeehouse - The adventure game renaissance

While part of me feels like it stings to see these legends of the industry more or less forced to beg fans for money to make more games, a larger part of me feels happy that these people are finally making games again. What's more, adventure games.

After Team 17 (I still can't forgive them for it) butchered the Larry franchise, I find it especially satisfying to see Al Lowe retake control of it. I never enjoyed anything Jane Jensen put out apart from Gabriel Knight (and I only really enjoyed the first one), but that Moebius thing looks good. What I find weird though is that she presents three options for games she could make: what if I pledge money and she makes the one I dislike? Why not three separate Kickstarter pages for each game?

I eagerly await to see if Lori & Corey Cole return to the Quest for Glory franchise, although with Ron Gilbert and Tim Schafer making a multimillion dollar adventure game, another wish like that seems like tempting the gods.

Although it's sort of fitting that Al Lowe also returns to gaming along with the Two Guys; after all, making fun of Al was 50% of the humour in Space Quest (in Space Quest 4, Leisure Suit Larry 4 was the super-computer virus that allowed Vohaul to overthrow Xenon).

Coffeehouse - The adventure game renaissance

Maddus is right, space doesn't have a temperature. It's not an absolute vacuum, but it's near enough as far as heat transfer goes.

The implication of this is that you wouldn't instantly freeze if you were ever in outer space unprotected, as is sometimes depicted in fiction. There are two ways for an object to loose heat: convection and radiation. In a vacuum, convection isn't possible, so radiation is the only way to shed heat, which is a fairly slow process. Objects in space that are exposed to sunlight typically tend to heat up, and dealing with heat management is one of the biggest design issue in spacecraft (see e.g. the concerns about solar panel malfunctions with SpaceLab and Hubble).

Did someone mention climate change?

Anyways, the cosmic background radiation is about 2.76 K. I don't know if you need atoms for temperature. A photon is energy, and is massless and of course travels at the speed of light. When the photon is absorbed by an object, it heats it up I imagine, at least until the energy is re-radiated.

When something radiates, what does this radiation consist of? Time to do some more studying.

Energy can also be in the form of potential energy. For example if I raise an object, it now has more potential energy. If I wind my hand powered flash light, it gets heavier. E=mc^2

-----------

The game I've played the most is Halo, The Demo.

The example you gave is a good starter. A photon with a very high wavelength, visible light, is absorbed by a atom. Wich slows down the proton, the proton transfers it's energy to the atom, the atom heats up, the slowed down proton then leaves the atom again, but since it is significantly slowed down it's wavelength increases and it becomes infrared light.

Back on topic;

What would be a good price for one of these games? $10?
