This is the situation.
Microsoft saw that they couldn't penetrate the phone market.
They also know they can't penetrate the smart tablet market. Mobile App developers like those I regularly work for are never going to go for it. So microsoft is playing their 2nd to last card with the xbox being the last.
They are planning an reverse app insurrection in the mobile market through their stronghold on the desktop. They want apps across desktop to be mobile ready because they know mobile resources are too thin for Microsoft platforms even at the biggest companies. They also want to push ms mobile tools and skills out through the desktop.
Thats why they are appearing so anti-developer to all of you ATM.
Sun tried this insurrection method to push spark in 1997 and it failed horribly for their business.
You can't outsmart cool. You just can't. People will start doing the unthinkable and ignoring the desktop for good.
Consider the end game:
A. Devs only sparsely rewrite for windows 8
B. people don't upgrade and buy new PCs and wait
C. Apple seals the coup de grace and with Jobs gone releases OS X the multi-hardware Desktop OS.
Thats all it takes to seal the fate of Microsoft. We're half way there.
