Doing stuff in XAML is insanely easier than in the brain* that is HTML/CSS/JS.

With XAML they can continue to have full control over all aspects of the language and make sure that it keeps up with the current needs of the platform. Anybody who complains about XAML has probably never used binding. Try that in a browser without crazy JS libraries and other complications. With HTML, they are subject to whatever the standards bodies are smoking.

Charles I think the problem is that alot of people cannot understand that there are choices. They are used to a world where someone says use this and you will like it because it is the best. So then arguments start up and there is always some under handed strategy of evil to end one technology over another. Its like going to the dealer to buy a car. Do you want stick or automatic? And the customer then asks the sales guy which one is better? The sales guy says if you know how to drive stick you might have more fun with the stick shift. If you dont just stick to driving the automatic. You pretty much end up getting to the same place. I think this frame of mind will keep going.

Java versus .Net ... C# versus VB ... C++ versus C# ... Power PC big endian versus Intel little endian ... AMD versus Intel ARM versus both of them ... any more tech wars you can think of .

Apple versus MS .. Google versus MS .. There have been several posts here (and tons elsewhere) where developers are looking for something concrete to hang their hat on. Unfortunately the days of a nice homogeneous environment provided by Microsoft are over and we just have to get used to the fact that we'll be writing apps on a variety of platforms with a variety of languages and APIs. It's browser compatibility 10x now that devices are in the mix and web apps are "all the rage" with HTML5 and all. The dominance of the PC is over and that's too bad. Web sites, mobile web apps, native mobile apps, native W8 apps, desktop apps, and on and on; it's a headache, costs more for everyone, etc. but it's the new reality that we live in -- and IMO thanks in large part to Microsoft's decisions these last 3 or 4 years.

DeathByVisualStudio you need to get a life. Microsoft is a big corporation and trust is something you should not apply to them or any other corporation. The PC is not dead and I would argue that a phone, a tablet etc is a personal computer (PC) . You might use it a bit differently or use it in different scenarios. Its a good thing that PC's are in different form factors and yes we can own more than one. As Charles said the key word is AND. I am not going to do Solidworks on my phone, or develop apps on it but yes I use it for browsing, web etc. So what. Microsoft is trying to do is make tools for it that are an improvement. Its not like they are made up of 3 people in a room and all of a sudden they say we now have to work on this and not that anymore.

Do you even look beyond your narrow view of all the stuff they do at Microsoft? They have all kinds of platforms that are useful in a wide variety of end products. I dont think any of it will go away if Microsoft sees there is a need and gets to generate monies from it. Just because it is not getting attention right now does not mean it is dead. One thing I have also learned is that if what you are replacing is not better than what you have it wont make it in the market no matter how much you hype it up.

Let's also not forget the glue that is web services, security implementation (preferably one that works singularly across your apps), and a database (cloud or otherwise).

It would be great if Apple iEverything, Android, BB, et all would just disappear so we have a more homogenous environment to work against but Microsoft lost that battle long ago. There are plenty of miss-steps here:

Lack of development of IE

Lack of success with tablet OS (origami, Windows tablet extensions -- more could have been done earlier here rather than being fixated on the desktop UI)

Lack of development of WinMo (same issue as previous)

And finally the mocking of the initial iPhone and not responding as if it were a serious threat.

Then throw on top of that pile the epic curtailment of WPF/SL with no story for LOB apps in W8 other that "re-imagine" them (oh and "skills transfer", yeah!). All-in-all it's a regular Greek tragedy.

Coffeehouse - This make me think that XAML might not be with us forever

From what I can gather from looking into various client application frameworks that use HTML + JavaScript, they essentially do use an implicit "web control" wrapper, as you call it, in the application stack. Calls to native APIs are abstracted in a way to look to the HTML rendering engine like calls to browser plug-ins . Browser plug-ins need not only look like Flash player, right? Just make the entire API look like a plug-in to the HTML rendering engine and you can expose your entire OS to Javascript.

From what I remember from playing with the SDK in Windows 8 CP, you cannot create libraries (i.e. the analog of CREATING a "plug-in") using Javascript. Javascript is strictly limited to front end development. IOW, it's just like with regular web applications. You cannot create plug-ins using Javascript. You can only call plug-ins from Javascript.

Not being able to create reusable class libraries is really the biggest limitation of Javascript programming in Windows 8.

@cbae, I wonder if Ander's new project TypeScript would fit the bill? We were just getting used to XAML technology, and were asking ourselves how long XAML will hang around, when all of a sudden (for us) earlier this week we find TypeScript. Intriguing.

At work, we are having debates about whether to stay with Windows Forms (PC only), or use XAML (mostly PC only), but in the end we will want some sort of front-end (client-server) app that can travel outside of the PC into various devices - but know that some of our apps will always stay on the PC in one form or another. With MS changing their minds all the time, it is difficult to decide which technology to "hang our hats on", as was previously mentioned. Because when you write something, it stays in place for years sometimes - decades even. We want to be certain that we'll be able to support this code and not have to rewrite it every two years....

Coffeehouse - This make me think that XAML might not be with us forever

I still have MFC C++ Apps I wrote for a company 12 + years ago and they still make millions a year on it. Winforms are fast and easy to put together along with C# or VB.net if you prefer. I dont care what anyone says , WPF / XAML take a bit longer to get an app done but it does turn out nicer. It depends if you need something quick or something more refined. I hang my hat on what works, what is fairly easy to use and debug, and what other team members can understand and contribute to. What I like about some of the things Anders does, is he has a deep understanding of what developers need to get their work done. I need to know and understand my application domain and have it satisfy my end users. I do not need to know all the plumbing, and memorizing more api's and semantics of a particular language. When I do lower level stuff that needs a hardware interface I typically use C and try to develop a layer so managed code can then take over at the higher end. If you are doing web apps and you want to use typescript then go for it. I dont particularly like it but it is a step up from the mess of javascript.

In fact, most companies that make money from software, tend to make no money from web apps, but it offers a useful way to supply information or get updates or whatever. Yes ecommerce is important for a lot of people that sell products, the web seems important to non-software based organisations, most of these tend to be retail or entertainment.
