Using Xbox and the cloud to pimp your DVDs

Since the xbox doesn't have blue ray, I was wondering if you could augment the video from a playing DVD with a visual diff of the HD version stored in the cloud? I'm not sure how much information you would need to add to make the picture look much better than the standard DVD on an HDTV.

If you compared the visual differences between the 9GB DVD and a HD master, you could probably derive a diff that could be about .5-1 GB compressed using modern compression techniques. 

Take that diff and visually merge it on the Xbox, and I think you have something cool.

That's a lot of diff information to store.

@spivonious: It would probably just be easier to stream a high-def version of the film from an online service like Zune, if the official DVD was detected in the drive. The problem with either suggestion, of course, is that the content providers wouldn't be able to re-sell you the films you already own in a slightly different format. And I suspect that's why it'd never happen.

@AndyC: That, and most consumers' internet connections aren't even close to being able to stream a blu-ray (which average 25Mbps including sound).

Yeah but you also save space through a vastly superior codec.  Color depth is the same, blu-rays don't support deep color.  And lossless audio is pretty niche, I'd say only a handful of people have a setup capable of taking advantage of it.  Even if you can decode it, average speaker quality and a low chance of perceived quality difference put it way into the audiophile camp.

I think you could get great quality 1080p/5.1 over 10 mbit.
