A question to anyone familiar with setting up a VPN connection between to Windows computers...

Is it possible to create, modify, or delete files over a VPN connection?

I ask because I've setup a computer to receive incoming VPN connections along side a vpn user account belonging to Administrators group. I can connect to the VPN from another windows computer, and am able to see all the folders an files by typing "\\server.address" in explorer, but I am unable to create, modify, or delete anything.

I've added the vpn user to the security tab of several folders on the computer accepting incomming connection, but it makes no difference. I still cannot modify files or folders.

Both computers are Windows 7 machines.

@sysrpl: The VPN authentication/account has nothing to do with the Windows credentials that your connecting client is attempting to use when accessing resources on the other computer.

Think of the VPN account as nothing more than the account used to establish the secure network tunnel.  Once the tunnel is established the network traffic being exchanged between computer 1 and computer 2 works just like they were on the same local LAN.

@sysrpl: On the computer that has the files, it must provide ACL access to the account attempting to modify the files.  Let's call PC1 the computer which is connecting to the other computer to modify files.  Let's call PC2 the computer which contains the files that PC1 wants to modify.

The ACL on PC2 for the file(s) in question must provide rights that allow the account from PC1 to modify.

By default PC1 will attempt to access the files using the Windows login account that was used to login into PC1.  If that fails it will then prompt for a user and password.  If a valid user and password (valid = valid on PC2) is entered then this account will be used to access the files on PC2.

@davewill:Maybe there is a web page somewhere which describes how to set this up. That is, in such a way as to provide read and write access to files and folders.

The ACL for directories and/or files is accessible by right clicking on the folder or file and selecting Properties then going under the Security tab.

On the Security tab is where you can add users or groups to the list as well as give the wanted permissions to each.
