VS2010 SP1 beta?

well my inner geek (that practically takes up all the room in there) is hanging his head in shame today. apparently there was a beta of vs2010 sp1 released several days ago.

i didnt even know there was a service pack in the works, i suspected there was but did they even announce it beforehand? i cant believe i missed that...

i was hoping to see the xaml debugging in there but no luck it seems im mildly bummed that there hasnt been any c9 content on this, if visual studio is not the backbone of the .net community i dont know what is..

Let us know how it works out for you. I am not ready to be a guinea pig on this one.

when they said some stuff about the help system they refered to it as a part of SP1 for VS 2010

the absence of C++/CLI Intelisense is really a bummer.

the new Help Viewer and SQLCE 4 are welcomed additions, though.

@felix9: I wonder what else is  in there, surely there must be more.. What bugs did they fix for example?

In any case, it seems to work fine.. Perf is a little better I think but I have to use it more to tell 

Opening solution (closed 2010, from win7 64 start menu) even with vs 2010 sp1 beta warmed up by opening same solution and closing it just before feels much slower than before. I don't recall seeing a "preparing solution" popup before which now pops up very briefly toward the end of the load. The solution was just one project with a console hello world complexity stuff, which in 2008 would load in <0.5 seconds.

Before installing SP1: ~3 seconds to open warm solution, now 6-9 seconds. I booted once as the setup asked and this measurement is after that. The result was repeatable over 5 attempts. The only 3rd party thing I have is .NET Reflector which added its own menu in there.

maybe your machine is busy doing NGen for the new framework assemblies in the background ?

All I can say is XAML and Visual Studio do not play nice. I edit my XAML a lot in Visual Studio and have done this on various machines and the result is the same.

XAML and Visual Studio do NOT play nice. This has been and issue since forever already...

Once I am in the code behind, The crashes stop.

@felix9: Could be. I did the same test again and now I got the Preparing solution box only on cold run and the warm runs are down to similar time as it was before installing SP1 beta.

I do have to say that's definitely not ideal experience for first time users of some product to have it crawl when you're making your first impression. The installer should be able to do whatever is necessary to speed up things for the first & subsequent runs. (I guess the install then takes longer but if it's really doing that CPU heavy processing after next boot without any warning to user that's the worse option)

on a perhaps related note, i found that recreating my project files as .net4 projects made them start and compile alot faster compared to their .net3.5 upgraded counter parts. comparing the .csproj, the old ones had alot more stuff in them..

thats not realted to sp1 at all though, just a possibly useful tidbit

also, fyi, the "preparing solution" dialog was there before as well, but it might not appear on faster machines.. that is probably why it shows upp all the time on my craptop at work
