Don't over-think it.

Now you might think this is harmless fun, but achievements were started by Xbox live and should only remain in xbox live.  PS3 has now come out with trophies and Apple has some achievements now too.  Real gamers frown upon those.  Microsoft has recently even put xbox live cheeovs on an iOS game (I think in an effort to stop Apple cheevos).   Adding anymore achievements to anything tries to devalue the microsoft xbox live cheevos.  It really devalues it being from Microsoft because now you don't know what cheevos you're talking about.  Is every program going to have it's own cheevos now?  MS has spent a lot of time developing the xbox live ecosystem where, PC, windows phone and Xbox all share the same achievement system.  This is very troubling.  I'm going to bring this up with True Achievements and my connections at Microsoft.

Visual Studio is not a "fun" program like Halo or Fable. It's a productivity application akin to Microsoft Excel. You use it to do work. Adding achievements to it is a way to break up the monotony of typing all day and to encourage developers to branch out and try new things in the application.

Making Visual Studio achievements part of Xbox live kind of misses the entire point: Visual Studio is not a game, and the "achievements" in Visual Studio are really just fun ways of exploring the application for people who are working.

And not all achievements are fun.  Do you think I had fun getting 950/1000 Gamerscore on Hanna Montana?  No, I do it to build my gamerscore.  They has also cheevos for solitare and Kinect testing stuff.    Visual Studio SHOULD have real cheevos, not these fake ones.

Also if you get my windows phone cheevos app, there is a self worth calculator that determines what level you are on. That's only on the WP8 version though.  There are exceptions like being a celebrity.

There are many PC games including BioShock, Gears of War, and Halo that have Xbox Live gamerscore.  The point is with this Xbox live eco system, we have only 1 list of Cheevos and we should stick to it.  It's just not right and it's going to confuse people.

Well I don't want to promote a site but True Achievements web site could probably do a conversion.  Through some agreement, they are the only ones that have access to xbox live cheevos API.  They do calculations based on how many people on their site got that achievement and have a true achievement number.  They could connect into the VS Cheevos and add that to your total, but an TA number or ration is not the number that you floss on your windows phone at clubs.  It would be much easier for MS to just add it to the Xbox live ecosystem.

What would the conversion rate be though? it would have to carefully worked out, after all, a Halo4 multi-player chuffo is worth a lot more than a Kinectamils one.

Oh ok, to the people that say my view of the world is warped.  Well I wake up every morning, look in the mirror and say "YES!!!!"  How many people can say that?  Most of our society is on pills so they won't be depressed.  Unless you're curing cancer or something, being interested in gamerscore or music or sports makes no difference.  Cheevos/Gamerscore will the next big sport in 10 years or so.  And yes I like to brag about my stats because I like to be the alpha male in the group.  It's human nature and I can back it all up anywhere I am by showing people my windows phone.

Sorry pal, but no... Gamerscore will never be important, ever.  Having a high gamer score says nothing good about you, and does you no favors. 

A person who games simply for the enjoyment of the games themselves should still be called a "gamer".

I'm terribly interested in seeing the result of putting a Gamerscore on a resume (and not while applying to a gaming company). It should go above the line that says you have a level 200 buffalo in Planet of ConflictOccupation, or whatever it is the kids are playing these days.

I think you'll find that in many ways, the days of the dungeon-dwelling, pasty IT professional are numbered. We've got a much more rounded industry. I've even found that over the past few years, while I still play video games, the hobbies that I pursue are mostly focused on creating, building and exploring the world around me. I dare say that most of the Niners seem to be the same way. So, it's great that you feel good about yourself, but don't expect everyone to value an integer field quite the same way.

As for Twitter I do have a lot of twitter followers around 150k youtube views.  See I have stats to back things up online.  I could tell you that a couple months ago I was breakdancing in the circle in vegas and Paully D walked by and gave me the thumbs up.  Now I have no proof of that, you would just have to believe me and you can't do that on the internet.  That's why in today's internet age, your stats are so important.

As for the comments about the cheevos leaders... The cheevos leader Stallion83 seems very well rounded to me too.  I don't know him personally, but he said he can bench double his body weight, has a girl friend and hosts the gamerscore popcast.

Well this is an argument that I've had many times with people in the gamerscore/cheevos community.  Not everyone is on my side on this and it's a bit of a controversy.  

My Response  on a thread iis:

Cheevos is a street word which has no rules, rumored to first be an internal word used in Microsoft.
It doesn't have to be logic, it just is because that's the way people use it. When I say I have over 50k cheevos, you know what I'm talking about.

When I say I have 50,000 xbox gamerscore, it doesn't flow right. 1st because it's a lot longer to type xbox gamerscore than cheevos. 2nd gamerscore is a plural with out an s at the end. It's just the way it is and the way people use it."

2. Make sure the fact is well known to the gaming masses

Stats are meaningless unless they are tied to something real. Video games, by definition, aren't real. YouTube views aren't real. Social network friends aren't real.

However, I have no right to tell you that you shouldn't do all of that. We all should be able to do whatever makes us happy as long as it doesn't hurt somebody else. Just stop acting surprised that the rest of us aren't impressed.

You can make a game very easy and many people will get it just for the cheevos.  There is a very easy game out there you can get 1000/1000 in like 3 minutes. (I don't give tips out so, I'm not going to tell you which one).  That game is rented all the time and has gotten a lot more sales because of it.  So yes if you make games you could put out bad game which wouldn't cost much time or money to make and it would probably make you a profit if you have easy cheevos.

Hold up. He couldn't even get them all. Why are we paying him any attention if he can't get 1000 cheevos in a Hanna Montana game? He's obviously an amateur.

You can say everything is meaningless.  YouTube Views got Psy famous, Pauly D got on the Jersey Shore because of his MySpace page.  I've gotten some breakdancing gigs cus of my MySpace page.  How do people get high positions at tech companies?  Cus they know people and can get investment money...  Yes not everyone will be impressed by cheevos.  But when I press Xbox Live on my Windows phone, my gamescore comes up.  When people view your profile/gamercard on xbox live, they see your gamerscore.  It's all about being the alpha male in the group.  The only way to become the alpha male is to impress people.  There is a certain delivery of your stats that's involved with impressing people and picking up chicks, so you have to have that skill too.

Yes it would, I would list that along with gamerscore and other things.  It's actually something you can look up instead of someone just listing C# expert on their resume.

The thing that makes cheevos relevant is how many people use it and if it's easy to identify.  Since there is now an ecosystem where the phone, tablet, pc, and console all use these cheevos most people know what it is.  If you have different types of achievements scattered all over the place, it devalues itself in a constant loop.  So if you're in the microsoft environment, there should ONLY be Xbox live achievements.  I don't know the correct process, but can you suggest a support ticket to make these achievements part of the Xbox Live achievements?

No, we aren't going to hook these achievements up to the Xbox Live system. If, at some point, the Xbox team decides to make an open sdk for app achievements, and decides to go away from games and open it to anything at all.. then maybe we'll consider it. Until then, we are just a little *fun* silo of achievements on our own. Perhaps we should have just called ourselves VS Badges to avoid the confusion, but we really, really, really didn't think anyone would expect that building a Windows Azure site would add to your gamerscore (note the gamer in there)

Now when (I predict in 3-5 years) the Xbox live team or who controls the achievements contacts you and asks you to transfer those achievements to the Xbox live system, you must be very careful to do it right.

I guess there would be 2 way to do it.  Erase the current ones and start over, or do a transfer.  I would suggest erasing everyone because of the problems that could come up.

If you do transfer, here are some things to look out for:

You don't want people to be able to copy someone's saved file and have all the cheevos pop on the transfer.  I hope you can't do that.

I also hope you are recording the mili-seconds when you get an achievement.  Xbox live does and it's one of the ways they catch cheaters.  Last year someone with the largest following on TA got caught for cheating which rocked the Xbox live world.  It was due to the mili-second timestamp which I heard were all set to 0 on hers.  I take no stand on this issue.

Other issues:

If you have achievements in VS2010 and VS2012, do they both count like xbox games in different regions do?  I would say yes you need to give double cheevos for those.

If you're a skilled enough developer, you should be able to rewrite the vsix to give you free cheevos (aka "freevos") without getting caught.

Verry good attempt at a scenario, but this was about cheating the VS achievement so I wouldn't have to spend anytime getting them.

we will have the usual left and right side advertising with the user content in the middle.

Now for those that don't know, xbox cheevos/gamerscore is in Xbox, Xbox Kinect games, Windows Phone, Windows 8 games, PC games and there is 1 game in iOS. Many of you have posted that you want cheevos for doing various things not on a device, well Kinect has the ability to do so and Kinect Labs do have cheevos. This is the future I'm talking about, where you can really get credit(and proof) for Cheevofying a chick. And everyone in the workplace that has windows 8 will now rack up cheevos at work playing solitare. MS needs to change the name from xbox live gamerscore to something like: live-score or life-score. This ecosystem is taking over and everyone is going to have cheevos like it or not. This is why I'm surprised that VS didn't have realy cheevos. (Hopefully in 3 years).

what I'm wanting is a twitter hashtag cheevos aggregator and crowdsourced approval. If I declared that I unlocked the 'shut my laptop cable in the door as I walk out of the room without unplugging it first' cheevo on twitter this morning, couldn't there be a way for a group of my peers to approve that as a real cheevo and add it to my gamertag and show me who else has also managed this feat? Surely this is the way cheevos will scale to real life?

Well I think Microsoft has done a pretty good job, and True Achievements website has done a good job sorting and ranking the data (although they have a monopoly on the data).  I don't want to promote TA, but if you've never seen their website, you should check out all the various rankings and statistics they offer to check your cheevos.

Microsoft has the authority because they have the best online gaming ecosystem.  Xbox 360 is the dominant console and had cheevos way before sony had trophies or whatever.  Things could change, but for now and years back Xbox360 has been very dominant.

I guess you could sue them like europe did so Internet Explorer isn't installed by default, saying you should be able to pick different gamerscore options....well let me just stop that thought, cus it's going no where.

Point is, until there is some dominant gaming system that won't port an equal game over to microsoft's console or PC, MS will be the central authority.  I guess if that did happen, I'd tell people, 'In 2012, I had 100k cheevos"

I think you're talking about coming up with a life points achievements, sort of how I did a self worth calculator.  The problem is verifying all those achievements, it's not realistic.

I've covered that topic many times, and it's even on the FAQ on the cheevos.com site.  Basically if I meet someone at a club or a party that has more cheevos than me, I buy them a drink and leave.  I'm not saying I'm the best, but better than about 99%.  Sort of the plot of my reality movie actually, I meet a gamerchick with more than me and see what happens to me.  Totally Krispix(female gamer chick leader) and Choskie 150k have confirmed to be in my movie.  You can see that they're both on my xbox live friends list too (How's that for some cred).

I've seen various lists of foods you shouldn't let them eat. However, I can't say I've had any problems just letting them eat whatever they can find, including kitchen scraps they pick out of the compost heap.

It's not a real big deal.  It's just voting on the best picture of me, that will be on many social media sites, apps and probably my movie dvd.  You can say, I helped vote for that picture.

Why yes.  Like my phone apps, this screensaver/poster/tee shirt pic or whatever you want to use this for is free.  Please make tons of photocopies and pass this around to everyone you know.  If you're the IT guy at your work, force everyone to use this screensaver.  And if you want to get in good with your girlfriend, go to a site that makes custom image pillows and giver her a silk pillow with this image on it.

And I wouldn't even brag about numbers like that. Only when you get near someone like NerdCubed (also a kind of LPer, with 780k subscribers and 148mln views) does it become worth even mentioning your YouTube stats.

Speaking of old, I had to look up what "LP" means in this context. I was confused.

As for photocopies, it's still cheaper and quicker to print out 1000 color photo copies of my photo and hand it out to people on the street corner than to use a color printer.

Whatever, I always think it's odd no one laughs when they see a chick with fake boobs, yet any  mention of enhancement gets laughs.  Well that is outside of hollywood or LA that is, most people don't have a problem with it over here and it's a common topic at the gym.

I don't think he was laughing... personally I was simply shaking my head as to where your mind went to my comment.

You could be overcompensating for:

• Not being able to grow a proper beard
• Getting turned down for a date in high school
• Not having any close friends
• Being turned down from the police academy & TSA school and instead taking a job as a mall cop

... or any number of other things... and yet your mind went there... which does seem to indicate rather telling things about how your mind works... the rest of us I suspect are a bit more classy and do not rely on what other people think of us to derive our self-worth.

Well this is the internet and 99.9% of the time it's about that.  Maybe you only visit classy internet sites, but that's not the case for most of the world.  Unless you specifically say something else, a person has to assume you're talking about that.  I also have a lot of haters and I hear that quite often.  Is my response a canned response?  Yes, but I hear it so many times on the internet, I might as well tell the truth and shut them up.  I've come to realize there's nothing wrong with it and judging by the amount of spam email it generates most people do it too.

To be honest maybe this site is a little different because I've gotten zero checks to privately message me wanting to meet up that mention they saw me from this site.  Also could be that my screen name isn't Bboy360 and I don't think I can change that.

Don't knock it till you try it... There are some really good Moonshine in the wild and most of that would NOT be what you can get in labeled container... There is also some what I might prefer to use as rocket fuel....

While I've never met a tequila (or gin) that I like... the fact both sell so well seems to suggest we just don't have pallets that are developed enough... which is ok by me as I've no desire to acquire a test for tequila.
