Visual Studio ​Achievement​s; they're not Xbox live right?

These visual studio achievements, there're not xbox live ahievements, so why are they there?  I got super execited to get cheevos with visual studio, but then it turns out they're not real cheevos.  Whst's the use if they don't go towards your xbox gamerscore?

Cheevos/Gamerscore is more than just fun.  For some people it's a profession and many websites are dedicated to it.  I for example am the only person in the world with 95,000 cheevos/xbox live gamerscore and over 55,000 myspace fans.

Now you might think this is harmless fun, but achievements were started by Xbox live and should only remain in xbox live.  PS3 has now come out with trophies and Apple has some achievements now too.  Real gamers frown upon those.  Microsoft has recently even put xbox live cheeovs on an iOS game (I think in an effort to stop Apple cheevos).   Adding anymore achievements to anything tries to devalue the microsoft xbox live cheevos.  It really devalues it being from Microsoft because now you don't know what cheevos you're talking about.  Is every program going to have it's own cheevos now?  MS has spent a lot of time developing the xbox live ecosystem where, PC, windows phone and Xbox all share the same achievement system.  This is very troubling.  I'm going to bring this up with True Achievements and my connections at Microsoft.

Visual Studio is not a "fun" program like Halo or Fable. It's a productivity application akin to Microsoft Excel. You use it to do work. Adding achievements to it is a way to break up the monotony of typing all day and to encourage developers to branch out and try new things in the application.

Making Visual Studio achievements part of Xbox live kind of misses the entire point: Visual Studio is not a game, and the "achievements" in Visual Studio are really just fun ways of exploring the application for people who are working.

@evildictaitor:Well I called the gamerscore popcast over a year ago and even asked the question about putting cheevos in things like excel, word, visual stuido...  Since it's in the same ecosystem, it's very easy to do.  First off, I should get credit for the idea and this app.  You can get one of the first episodes of the gamerscore popcast.

And not all achievements are fun.  Do you think I had fun getting 950/1000 Gamerscore on Hanna Montana?  No, I do it to build my gamerscore.  They has also cheevos for solitare and Kinect testing stuff.    Visual Studio SHOULD have real cheevos, not these fake ones.

Before you jump in there trying to claim credit Gamification has been around a while. Visual Studio is just a recent effort towards this older idea.

Well Xbox Live cheevos is a whole other level than Gamification.  You really can't compare the 2.  Xbox live more than just games.  There are some Kinect apps that are not really games that have cheevos, plus there might come out with other apps.  The apps like ESPN show up in your games played, but no cheevos for it.  It's just a matter of time.  It's very hard to talk to people with less than 20,000 gamerscore.  They just don't understand.

Well Stallion83 the gamerscore leader doesn't have to work through sponsorships and ign pays him to write articles.  FYI Stallion83 follows my blog on True Achievements.

As for myself, I'm working on a movie that I put on kickstarter and I pick up a lot of chicks at clubs showing my gamerscore on my phone.  Right now, I'm getting more cred and respect from my cheevos, but later I will probably make a lot of money from it.

I have 2 apps on the windows phone market place and various websites which I won't advertise.  I'm talented enough to do many things.  I was also rated 9.5 on Hot or Not website, so yes people do say I'm too good looking to use visual studio.  But let me assure you that I have Visual Studio 2012 and even develop stuff in (WPF, Silverlight, ASP.NET, Windows phone 8 and Windows 8 apps).  I even had 2 windows phone 7 apps out before the release date so there's some street cred.

Am I the only one surprised to see myspace referenced on the internet these days?  I honestly don't remember the last time that happened.  Years at least.

I'm surprised that you find the myspace reference the only surprising thing in everything Dan's said so far.

What I find bizarre is why he's singling out Visual Studio. Just about every game for every platform has achievements nowadays. Even Minecraft has achievements! None of these are tied to Xbox Live.

So why single out Visual Studio achievements, which aren't even part of the core VS product (it's an add-on), while there are tons of AAA games stepping on his turf too?

Also, achievements or gamer score literally means nothing. It's e-peen, pure and simple.

This is going to be immensely entertaining.

Mm.  So you're a hobbyist software developer, then.  Professional means you do it for a living.  

But never mind that --- what you're actually doing here is telling a bunch of uninterested men about how attractive you are.... why yes, gentlemen, I can code AND I'm hot.... and while it's perfectly okay to be homosexual, Dan, this really isn't the forum to be "picking up" on.
