Not a bad one. I've seen this in some Tablets. Doesn't the WebOS do this on that HP tablet?
Simply, when you're looking at all of the tasks running, flick up the task to close it.

Makes sense to me.

@magicalclick: That is why people should try both iOS and Android before criticism, both OS's already offer this.

WP Mango allows only 5 tasks to be "open" in the task manager anyway. It's kind of pointless to have it in WP, no matter how "cool" the gesture is.

iOS's "Quick Acces" bar offers no way for the user to differentiate between running and suspended applications, unlike OS X's dock which has a little blue indicator.

keyword, running and this is not Win8 Metro

@magicalclick: Actually that looks like a good idea. Closing apps with the back button kind of works, but it's hopeless if the app happens to be using the back button for something else (e.g. IE).
-
@Blue Ink:
back button does not close Zune MP3 player and last .fm radio.
Maybe I am picky with wording. I am beaten when the world really going to use the following as new English standard: CPU as PC Tower (I hate this trend), and Close App as Remove from Frequent List (Dear God please never let it happen).

@magicalclick: If you have to worry about what is or isn't "running" on your phone, you've already lost. Thankfully I've never had to care so far with WP7.

Another odd feedback.

How are users supposed to know they can flick up? Is there a trashcan at the top of the screen or something?
-
Display transparent png above the image, with a large arrow pointing toward the top, with the text;
"Flick up to close the SOB"
beneath it?

That's the reason for the "kind of works", and why I think that a better mechanism would be good to have.
@Bas: probably the same way you find out that you need to flick up the lock screen, or pretty much everything else: by accident.
-
If it needs to be implemented, I would prefer the way that WP's IE9 handles tabs, just add a cicle with an X in the upper right corner of each task. Flicking up is not intuitive without any visual hint.

Horrifying. There needs to be some sort of visual cue that is a metaphor for ending the task: a trashcan, the grim reaper, a bottomless pit of raging hellfire, something that you'll be flicking it towards. How do Android and iOS do it?
-
I think the issues of "visual cues" are alieved by "How to..." applications. Give users a walk through. I'm sure when you fire up WIndows 8 for the first time there will be some sort of "How do you use this?" interface to walk and/or talk you through things.
