Does the average user's Win7 start menu have spam adverts in it? Not in my experience, so I see no reason to assume that Win8 will be any different, other than the basic assumption that anything new is automatically bad.

@Dr Herbie: No but they do tend to have a lot of toolbars installed because they just click yes to everything. I was more thinking about if they continue clicking yes to everything is this what they will get?
PS: Sorry, about bring the start screen topic back again. It is here to stay and I do not really think that is a bad thing.
-
@fabian: If apps could just create tiles as and when they like, maybe, but the restrictions Win8 puts in place would make that pretty unlikely. Not to mention I think I recall reading there was an app store rule that you aren't allowed to advertise through your primary tile.

Awesome

I see the IE 6.0 reference now

If Win 8 RT will do pr0n, we will beat iPad hands down!
-
@Maddus Mattus: like this?

-
using tiles to display ads is against the store rules, yes.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/hh694083.aspx
2.3 Your app must not use its tiles, notifications, app bar, or the swipe-from-edge interaction to display ads

Unless there is some policy against it, I can guarantee that there will be advertisements on peoples desktops, in exchange for some type of credit.
If Proctor & Gamble don't have a tile in the works, I'd be shocked.

Who'd want to install a P&G "app"? Is it going to tell you when you're running low on soap?
-
@fabian:
I see you have Bonzi Buddy there. Most excellent app!
-
@cbae: You have it all wrong, by allowing P&G to put a Tide ad on your desktop for 15 days, you might get a coupon or something like this.

It wouldn't be as pretty, it will be like 10 icons from MS Office, 5 icons from Visual Studio, 7 icons from windows live, 20 icons from Dell, and 4 icons for DVD player software, 3 icons for DVD burning software, 5 icons of preload app that does the same thing as managing WiFi and basic Video editing.
They are icons, not tiles, it is not as pretty.
-
@JoshRoss: According to the rumors, P&G is working on the awesome "Metro Live Tide" app. It uses the webcam to track what you are wearing, how long you've been wearing that, and how you should wash it.

They could do the same thing by having you keep your browser window up at all times with their ads streaming to it. And best of all, it would be cross-platform.
-
@cbae:What's more, a Metro app can't actually determine in any reasonable way that it's tile is actually visible or that it's notifications aren't blocked. So it would be trivial for anyone to download the app, hide the tile and block any notifications and still get whatever benefits there were without seeing the adverts. Which would make it a fairly pointless business idea.

The thing that's annoying me now is that you can't create a column of small sized tiles . If you drag a tile next to another one on an empty column, it will always place it to the right, so your column can fit a large sized tile. Why!? It just takes up space if youre not planning to put a wide tile there.

@fabian: Spot on. Despite Microsoft's rules and the fanboy choir here I fully expect people's start screens to become useless. Actually on my tablet the start screen is already useless because the tiles I want to see notifications for are all left-most on the screen (HUD style) but they are not the apps I most frequently use. It throws all of Sinofsky's heat map BS right out the window.
