Where is the official messenger app for WP7?

So far the only thing that I see is this one from Miyowa. It'a pretty good but is slow when refreshing contact status and plus, of course it isn't a MS app, so it suffers from dehydration when I hit the windows key...

I want a messenger app that will run in the background.

You could use a web-based client, and keep it open in a tab in IE.

Yes, you think Microsoft could put the effort in for what are supposed to be two of their flagship products. And an IM app that doesn't that doesn't run in the background is about as useful taking imodium when you're constipated. But what do I know, the great Gods of the smarthphone world have decreed that a smartphone is not a PC and multitasking is not needed.

@GoddersUK: I do wonder if it is the carriers behind this, since Messenger support could undermine some of their revenue streams. Orange, for example, provide an IM utility that works with MSN, but is pay to use. And if every phone had Messenger, who would bother with the more lucrative SMS service?

SMS is store-and-forward, IM really requires the other person be online at the same time. Arguably phone-accessible email is a bigger threat to SMS than IM.
