I use IE. I've never had a problem with IE but I just installed Chrome because the font smoothing in Win8 IE10 makes my eyes water.

I know Cleartype doesn't look good when you turn an LCD in portrait mode but I'M NOT USING A TABLET.

MS really needs to give us an option to let IE10 obey our Cleartype preferences!

Microsoft should take a long hard look on how font rendering is done. I find in general Windows lacking in this department. Devices like the Retina I devices and most android phones have great fonts. I am not sure if this is due to the DPI or what.

Cleartype never really has worked out for me ;(

I think very good clean typography is essential to a device. The eye to screen relationship is very important.

I am not getting problems with IE10 font rendering on Win8. It does not seem bad and with IE and Firefox side by side they seem almost identical.

Except for wrong colors in IE because it does color management very badly.

The text in Windows desktop and in the Metro start screen is mostly rendered well, must be with cleartype. However from time to time a notification shows with extremely badly rendered greyscale anti-aliased text (e.g. on the login screen, power button, menu to select sleep, restart etc.).

I have not used any metro apps yet. But Microsoft advertises the Surface as a "cleartype" screen, so presumably it is available for programs to use?

The official reason is somewhere between "ClearType doesn't work on devices that need to dynamically orientate the text" and "Monitors and tablet screens are now high enough DPI to not need ClearType".

Of course that doesn't really help people with low DPI monitors in a fixed orientation who upgraded their OS without upgrading their PC :/
