If I am in Internet Explorer 10 and try and copy sections of a URL, or am in notepad copying a line of text, the whole experience is flaky at best. I don't think I can put up with this unless a fix is released. It makes me feel like before I was walking on a 10 foot wide plank, now I am walking on a tightrope using it.....urghhh!

As it so happens, I have decided to run as a limited user now when using the internet so I am logging in as a limited user, after some malware installed an exe in c:\program data and would stop task manager running and take over my desktop.

I realise that security must be inconvenient but I guess that word of the moment here on Channel 9 "crippled" is what the result is.

OK, I have just tried to select channel9.msdn.com in the above URL to make it bold, and cannot as the OS has a mind of its own. I am running the admin account.

I was going to upgrade my work machine to Windows 8, that ain't gonna happen now (terrible English BTW)

I'm running as a limited user, I have done so since XP, and still don't have any issues with copy/paste. I also don't have any issues copy/pasting between regular and elevated processes (there are no security restrictions on that, I think lensman is confused with drag/drop between processes of different accounts or integrity levels which is restricted).

You still haven't described what your problem actually is, other than "it's broken". Can you give a concrete example with repro steps of something that doesn't work?

I'm not sure I understand this... Are you using a mouse or touch?

Copy and paste does not work on some machines on Windows 8

I suspect a similar process is happening in the UI for win8, but I just assumed that it was the touch interface being uncooperative.

I don't like touch very much.

In an administrator account, I opened Metro-style Mail.  I copied some text, and closed the application (drag from top to bottom method).  Then I pasted that text into Notepad++.

that is indeed bad. Good news is Windows Live Mail is still available to all Windows versions and it is 100 times better anyway.

Works on my machine. Yesterday I did about an hour of intensive copy/paste back and forth between the reader app, and desktop IE using a combination of keyboard and mouse methods. No problems whatsoever.

I tried to copy e.g. an Link from Chrome App to the Folder on the Desktop. This doesn't work for me. I think this is a problem between Apps and Desktop Applications in general. The same problem occurs if I choose the Mouse to Drag the Link on my Desktop. This doesn't work too if I starting Google Chrome as App instead of Application on the Desktop I cannot move to the Desktop anymore This happens with other Applications too.

I think this is a very important issue to interchange between Apps and Desktop Application.

Second problem. After that often the selected text is not actually cut (or copied) captured. The previous clipboard selection gets pasted (instead of the current one) when pressing CTRL V. It happens often. Not always easy to replicate though.

I'm using a laptop (i3 2.5GHz with 8GB memory).

I'm wondering whether this might be related to the auto-hibernation of background Metro apps - lots of clipboard actions are managed by COM and Windows messages under the hood, so if you copy something onto the clipboard which actually sets the OleClipboard to an IStream, you might find that you're unable to get the data out at the other side if the program has suspended.

Sounds like an avenue for investigation at least... :/ 

The problem was not Windows 8, but the "Send to Bluetooth" COM Add-in on my system that apparently shimmed itself into the Clipboard system. Disabling C:\Program Files (x86)\Intel\Bluetooth\btmoffice.dll in the COM Add-in manager made Copy and Paste robust.

Now if only I could get to "Calculator" quickly from the Desktop....

Upgraded and fresh installs of Windows run exactly the same code under the hood. If there is a problem on one it will affect the other.

Cut/copy/paste is amazingly frustrating, sometimes it works, most of the time I have to repeat the operation to make it work. Every time I want to throw the machine across the room... between that and the touchpad issues I wish I bought a different machine. 

UPDATE: I disabled the send to bluetooth com+ app and cut/copy/paste works reliably now. Thanks for a great tip. 

This copy/paste issue is a real annoyance!

In outlook (2013 anyway)

File > Options > Add-ins.

At the bottom you will see Manage COM Add-ins and a GO button. Press GO.

Find and untick from list.

I use a mouse by the way.
