All I can say is "dayam"!
Windows 8 booting from a VHD installed on a regular notebook hard drive is faster than Windows 7 booting from an SSD.
It's not even close.

My Windows 8 boot time is terrible. It takes it least 12 seconds to boot and get a DHCP address. Those people in WinDiv should all be fired. If you take those 12 seconds and multiply it by the number of patch Tuesdays that occur within a year, you'll find that's about 2.4 frick'n minutes. Some people in the military can complete their entire morning routine in that timeframe.

EDIT: sorry for the tiny url.
@JoshRoss: That's not too bad. That gives you just enough time to take a few steps to get your morning coffee, change your mind, and come back to your desk.
I'm pretty impressed with how much faster 8 comes back from hibernation than 7. My system has 8 cores so that's probably why, given that restore from hibernate is now multi-threaded. Seriously, it's gone from 25 seconds to 3.
Guess I'm making up time that people like JoshRoss are losing. (and I bet you he probably spent more than 2.4 minutes writing that post)

Just finding a link to something that could be done in under 2.4 minutes took longer than 2.4 minutes. One thing that might throw a monkey wrench into my timings, would be that the application of the patches might invalidate the cache used to boot the system. In which case, I might have to add a couple of seconds to that figure. Impressive either way.

@JoshRoss: I bet telemetry data from your machine will help in figuring out what's going on. You may need you to run some boot diagnostic utility and send Microsoft the output file.

@Charles: I don't think you'll find much in Josh's telemetry data except sweet, sweet, sarcasm.

Are there people genuinely complaining about 10 second boot times, and the additional two seconds it takes to get an IP address?
-Josh
I'm using Win8 in VirtualBox and my boot time (cold boot) is 35 seconds. Do I have to enable some option to get it to boot faster?

I think my computers take longer than that just to POST.
The boot times with an SSD make it so I don't have time to go to the bathroom any more. I barely have time to sip my drink. ![]()
I haven't installed the RP yet, but my CP boot times would be fast if it didn't take 30 seconds for my SATA controllers to initialize. Although, my PC is in need of an upgrade; it was top-of-the-line when I built it back in 2006.
