I would encourage your son to not attempt this. If he's a developer and needs to test Internet Explorer 8, have him check out http://browserstack.com. Aside from that, Internet Explorer 10 is going to give him a better experience online as developers move towards adopting use of the latest APIs, and standards.

If he wants the web to be useful and enjoyable, don't move backwards. If he wants his browser to be identified as Internet Explorer 8, he can change the Browser Mode by pressing F12. It will, by default, be in Internet Explorer 10, but he can easily change it to 8. This will modify the userAgent string provided by the browser, as well as much of its behavior.

There's a problem with IE9 for that matter, from his point of view. You see what he wants is to have between 40 and 50 or more tabs automatically open whenever he gets into IE. He's found that IE9 restricts the number of tabs he can have opened at once to something less than 40 (I think it is). Certainly IE10 restricts the number to something less than 40. I typically have 1 to 3 tabs open at once. Sometimes when I'm in a hurry I might open up to about 10, but that's it, and that's not for long. My son, on the other hand, always has a boat load of tabs open in IE. IE8 gives him that flexibility.

I can only suggest adopting multiple IE using pin sites. And use the favorite blue arrow on the folder to open all favs at once. Sorry to hear IE9 is not capable of satisfying his need.

Coffeehouse - Windows 8 and older versions of IE

Wow. FWIW, I've found that no browser really likes to go above 30-40, depending on the content. I haven't tried Chrome in a while, but Firefox hits some arbitrary limit and just disappears. Poof!

Coffeehouse - Windows 8 and older versions of IE

After trying to use IE10 on Win8 for any extended period of time, I would probably like to downgrade as well - the sole reason being the lack of Cleartype (or the awful implementation). Man do some fonts just look atrocious in IE10 on Win8.

Aside for that, I have no complaints - it's extremely fast and I generally have no problems with the interface. But man, that font rendering is a huge stumbling block.
