I don't think that the media is necessarily negative, but I think people have just recoiled and decided to wait and see. Initially the problems with Windows 8 were a lack of communication from Microsoft to its core developers, as the Windows team thought they would dictate, but Windows needs developers, and most of them are frustrated, angry and unenthused.

Steve Ballmer is known for repeating the words "Developers, Developers, Developers!", the Windows team decided to perturb its core developer base, marginalise and sideline them, but it is they that will make the platform shine.

I have gone back to Web development for now, as I cannot bet on Microsoft's commitment to anything.
