At least for the moment the desktop seems to be like WinForms, supported and tolerated but not enhanced or recommended (though perfectly capable and mature). 

I doubt the codecs will return, IMO they could at least add them as a purchased add-on.  If the price was reasonable I think that would be a happy compromise.  As example I paid for a start menu replacement (as many I know have) so the pay for feature model is working in some respects where Windows has been gutted of past features.  I suspect the only thing that will change MS's mind is a Vista style flop.
