I was just watching a review of a Crumar dual-manual organ and it turns out it's actually a PC running WinCE and some virtual organ sottware.

I guess it's just a bit more complicated than BitFlipper's current Windows CE based project ![]()
In fact, there are musical instruments out there running WinXP and even full 64bit Win7.
Open Labs makes amazing professional keyboards that are really full PCs built into MIDI controllers.

@dentaku:That seems like major overkill for a musical instrument, but neat to see nonetheless.

Wow, that miko lxd is an actual PC !
Load Pro Tools on it and have your studio onstage?
Brilliant. Now to Ian for financing this for my son...

@dentaku:
Interesting. As mentioned in the video, the software developer that wrote the software for that organ also had previous software called ORGANized trio, which I have have used extensively in the past

Yup. This organ seems to be running a variant of the newest version of the VST named VB3 http://www.genuinesoundware.com/?a=showproduct&b=24
If I was in the market for a digital organ the Crumar would tempt me more than the new Nord or even Hammond's own new dual-manual organ.
Of course I can't really play anything so my AKAI Midi controller will do just fine

Open Labs makes rackmount PCs, keyboardless touchscreen synths and those large workstation synths. They used to all be 32bit XP even through the Vista days but once Win7 came out they switched to 64bit Win7.
They've recently partnered with Dell to make music specific laptops.
For years I've been wanting C9 to talk to companies like Open Labs that use Windows in unique devices like this. -
Less is more I think. Fatboy Slim did awesome stuff like Renegade Master on that ole Apple IIe setup of his. Every album he's done in the nice studio he made has been aweful =)

@Harlequin: Indeed. Sometimes when the tools are limited, more care is put into making something great. When the tools are great, people get lazy.

Success dilutes motivation and inspiration. Not anything involving equipment, imho.
Keep 'em hungry... motivated...
I see new equipment most often foments creativity both for programmers and musicians.
But I do believe that fat birds tend to sleep in and go wormless.

I've been an avid home musician for over 20 years but I found that over the years, it has become more and more difficult to create anything interesting and that my interest has been waning. Now this could be because I'm getting older and my interest could be changing, but I think it has much more to do with the complexity of the tools today vs in the past.
Whenever any musical inspiration comes along, by the time I'm ready to "lay it down", the right side of my brain is so swamped by the left side due to all the technicalities of the tools that it's basically gone at that point.
I remember that things used to be "easier" a decade ago or so. Now doing even the most simple of things takes a huge amount of mouse clicks, setup, loading of DSP plugins, instruments etc, configuring them etc.
Now it's all about the pre-recorded loops so I guess I'm doing it wrong...

-
I find making sounds and messing with different forms of synthesis to be more interesting that trying to arrange a song so I'm fine with all the technical stuff because that what Ive set out to do in the first place
I don't delude myself into thinking I'm actually going to finish and entire song.
Allot of the people buying the new crop of modular analog synths never make an entire song. They just like the process of creating sounds and looping sequences. -
@BitFlipper: Interesting. If I'm in the music room playing, I've already setup ACID to record before I start. I can always edit down to the interesting bits later. If I came up with something, and then had to start up ACID, set the levels, arm for recording, and hit record, I'd have forgotten what I came up with.

@BitFlipper: My 17 year old is evidence for me that if technology is slowing you down, you're old...
