Feedback from my Friends Enrico G.
TO : Joe Belfiore and WP7 Team
I’ve been a BlackBerry user for the last three years. I’m a quite heavy messaging users, I have three different email accounts on my BlackBerry, I also use the BlackBerry Messenger, Twitter, Facebook, Whatsapp and of course SMS on a daily base.I decided to buy the LG Optimus 7 with Windows Phone 7 at the launch day because I really like what I’ve read about it.So I started using WP7 with the best attitude, I know it’s a brand new OS so I’m ready to live with some initial limitations. In Europe it’s really common for people to have two mobile phones, usually one is for personal use and one is for work.I like to file my contacts numbers using the Home phone and Work phone fields so I know which number to use.I’ve imported in WP7 about 400 contacts and I was really surprised that in a system so “contact centric” I couldn’t send a SMS to a generic phone number. When you view the contact details, only the “mobile” number offers the possibility to send a SMS.At first I was shocked, I tried everything but I couldn’t find a way to send a SMS to a number that was not listed as “mobile”.After asking around I was told that there is a way... it requires about ten clicks: so if you are viewing a contact, you need to get out from there, go to the start page, choose the SMS app, start writing a new SMS, avoid to use the auto completion recipient field, click on the + sign, search for the contact and finally choose a phone number.
That is really an awful user experience.I understand that in US most people don’t have to face this problem, but here in Europe you are going to have a lot of frustrated customers. And the problem itself could be easily solved just adding a context menu to the phone numbers in the contact page showing the optional “send SMS”.
Given that WP7 has been presented to the public as a system that put the things that you care more about up front to be easy to be used, I find quite ironic that to send an SMS it take so many non-intuitive steps.
You might think that is a minor hiccup, but it’s not: when I told to some friends about it, they thought I was kidding, they couldn’t believe it.You know, I can leave with some features missing from the phone, I knew about them when I bought it and I understand some of them will come in future updates, but some basic things like the ability to send (easily) SMS to a generic phone number are really a “must have” feature. Having hundreds of contacts that don’t use the “mobile” field at all is not a corner case, very likely it’s the majority of the users. So please take the time to make the required fix and to released it ASAP, since those little “stupid” things will hurt the WP7 perception a lot, and it’s a shame since the overall quality of WP7 is amazing.
Thank you.
