Read the comments on this site alone. It's pretty much the same everywhere. Nearly half of all comments I've read have been sexist idiocy. "Babe", "hawt", "VPILF" and other such comments have no room anywhere, much less as comments on stories like these.

I mostly have to wonder how can anyone be this sex-starved when you're on the internet? People, you're just one mouse click away from the greatest porn archive in the world. If you need a release this bad, just do it and come back.

It's also pretty funny reading the youtube comments if a slightly (emphasis on slightly) attractive woman is talking about some crap in the vid.. Good God! One would think these guys were raised in a monastery and it's the first time they see a female of the species. Would they get a deadly hormone-overdose as well if they would just turn on TV?

Not that these posters reflect the tech industry, but it still is a deterrent.  Who (male or female) wants to see that type of talk about somebody who has accomplished landing an important job in a large well known company?

That's because the comments are made by people who make comments on sites. It's a self-selecting set of people who

a) Have lots of time on their hands but nothing exciting to do with it (i.e. are unimportant)

b) Think people want to hear what they think (i.e. think they are important).

It's actually a good thing really. It's demonstrating that lots of the people with hateful views have crappy lives where they don't have a job that takes up lots of their time, where they don't have much stuff to do, and they don't have the money to spend the time that they do have doing something exciting; i.e. that people with hateful views have crappy lives.

It's cosmic justice really.

On the plus side, there's a simple solution to it: Don't read the comments on sites.

I came to that conclusion a long time ago, but somehow haven't been able to break the comment reading habit despite knowing rationally that I should. I think I'm addicted to the rush of indignation I get when I read something I violently disagree with - but it's a really bad habit for my mental health.
