Lots of familiar names - and some un familiar ones too

Me? still in toronto. 1 year in our new house - still love it.

Havent been following MS too much as of late..  i saw some screens of metro - interesting (if a bit BOXY)

Is there a build of 8 thats half worth loading? Metro unlocked?  #__________  ?

Still have the touchscreen running 64 - should handle it.

ps - the new store in your home ads make me puke lol

- opening - graveyard at night

- zoom into fresh mound of earth - rain - lightning

- wooden windows flag logo - all old looking rises out of the dirt...

- zoom out - all ground around it is shaking - rising

- c9 guy sits up from graveyard

- windows flag on chest (shining)

- zoom out - countyside - many HUGE c9 guys with flag logos - dusk

- lights shine from them - turn dark into daylight

- shot of apple tree - zapped /turns to Rib Eye Steak tree

- newspaper blows by: headline "gates says tablet the future - 2001 (or whatever)

- zoom out shot - shows c9 guys with lights turning darkness and graveyards into day / parks/gardens  - moving across the country side

I actually like it.  Maybe not the steak part, but for the most part, I like it.

it sort of did two things (for me)

1 was acknowledge the come from behind position in a self depreciating way - ie; rising from grave - fun sci fi theme - spreading "light"

2 would be:  hey you were first - tablets are ms - so its only natural youve been waiting for the best one (newspaper / gates / past)

3 would be - the old saying "awaken a sleeping giant... which is what iOS did (iphone/ipad) to MS

so...we USE it...but dont apply it to the redundant/expected target - we apply it to the consumer

"awaken the giant in YOU"   like - we just woke up with all this power...want some?

PS - did you here they fired the Yahoo CEO by phone?  Amazing isnt it.

so - Metro... Boxy....  hmmm. what do i mean by that.

Well for one - it looks boxy.  It is basically boxes (tiles) all over the screen.

Have you seen the new Apple campus spacehip? completely round with 100ft glass.  Also - if you havent seen the video of steve jobs himself - talking to the committee of cupertino - youtube it (or soapbox it - oh ya)

Back to the square tiles.

I "get" that rather than an icon you click - to see info - that a "tile" shows the most important part of that info - already = why click.

So all that is good. (info in your face).  but still - it is BOXY haha

is there no way to have done this so it doesnt look like an excel spreadsheet?

Rotating wheels of tiles?  Circular tiles?

how about just please everyone and offer the following:

-Please choose info UI delivery:

Squares
Circles (Less Efficient!)
MetroSphere 3D ( no god dont choose it!)

In case you're wondering, I have a WP7 and I think I'd find it distracting if everything were circles. It's hard to detect size differences with circles...I think I would not be able to focus on anything. Squares are better for repeated differences. Even though it's more boring to glance at boxes, since they're all mostly the same shape, the deviation from sameness stands out more. I guess you don't argue it's efficiency, but I'd take efficiency over coolness in this scenario as I use the phone every day between class.

Love to hear your ideas for a better Metro.

I think of all the mobile styles, I like it the most. Less clutter == good!

Anyway Metro is a giant sphere, you're just seeing it very close up so it looks flat (see Flat Earth theory for historical context)

Although I'm amazed you're back posting and haven't yet mentioned the fact that Windows 8 includes not only the "Up" button in Explorer but also an IE fullscreen mode that is truly fullscreen with no visible chrome whatsoever. In fact I was beginning to wonder if you'd got a job inside MSFT and were secretly steering everyone in your direction.

dont know if anyone remembers MeeksEarth (the dolphin UI) but i loved working on weird stuff like that (back in the day)  or the windows 7 that was a window from space shuttle and the UI was a search box
