Coffeehouse - i want illumiRoom!!!!

That Sony video was produced as an ad for the Playstation Video Store, in a studio. It's not even remotely the same. It also requires acting from the participant (the guy isn't -really- seeing a floating cube. He can't see it at all), and a bunch of stagehands in full-body white suits moving props and furniture around in your living room. Anyone even suggesting it's the same thing is either insane or deliberately trying to be a negative nancy.

Anyway, it looks awesome. I wonder what kind of projector they're envisioning for this in a consumer product, and where it would be positioned.

I also want to see a C9 video about this.

This sounds like it would be doable with a hobbyist setup. You can scan the room with a single depth image from Kinect (or two or three if you have to tilt it), and you have a depth map with which to distort an image, which you then send to a bog-standard projector.

I wonder what kind of algorithm one would use for the distortion. They do the same thing with projections on buildings, and I've always wondered.

Edit: I am wondering how this looks in real life, though. Those Johnny Chung-Lee Wiimote videos looked amazing too, but when you see it in real life (and with two eyes, rather than through one camera lens) the effect is much less impressive. I'm thinking the same might apply to stuff like, say, the depth effect with the snowflakes.

The next Xbox leaks included information about immersive gameplay, so this is probably a first peak at what they were talking about. I think you really can expect this with the next console... maybe through a peripheral (even the Kinnect itself) available later, but this is exactly what the leaks seem to have indicated were the plans.

That thing looks awesome!

To be honest though, despite this being like ambilight on steroids, crack and acid, I still prefer the real deal in terms of 3D glasses (not the ones you use in the cinema but the ones popularized in 80s virtual reality culture).

There is a lot of research around what appears to be nice "hacks" (arrogantly put) but I don't see anything able to compete with a fully substituted and interactive field of view. Add stereo cameras and you have augmented reality. Reminds me of the twisted movie Strange Days.

Btw, it is not about 3D, thus, no need for eye tracking. It is more about panoramic experience. And there is one part they didn't show you, but, I think it reconstruct the room in real time as the video claimed. Meaning, if your cat walks over, the image will adjust to your cat. Obviously it is overdone, but, since MS research already have such tech, they just reused it. and I loves the shockwave effect. Had to keep replay it to make sure they are not faking it.

The whole illumiRoom would just be a rear projector, and only games with built in functionality(e.g. ones that allow Kinect, 3D....special code)...would "talk" to the projector. A game with snowflakes would have elements it sends to the projector (e.g. a 2nd special HDMI output on an Xbox 720).

Not saying it's easy. It's just "extras" a game would have.

That is way cool. This is something I'd like to see make it to market sooner than later, especially if it extends real pieces of the game into the room (like you could see a car driving next to you out of your peripheral vision). I've also thought it would be cool to integrate the PixelSense table into the gaming experience, either integrated with the Xbox or by itself (something that could really bring it into the mainstream which would help bring the price down on it via economies of scale), but it doesn't seem like I'll ever see one outside of a Vegas casino. That is the single coolest product that's next to impossible to buy.
