Fed up of waiting for trickles of information and each time there is a little news, It's bad. No dates, no info, now only 80g usable, 17w processors etc.. What's next at release? 3 hour life? an additional $200? 

#fail thanks, but no thanks..  Surface really does feel like MS's client swan song. And you do nothing but get the back up of the people you are expecting to create the apps for it... which I also believe are now dwindling. Cheerio, it's been a journey.. will the last one out please switch off the light wishing you all the very best with your hobbies and careers.

That can't even compare the sadness that I feel for those dopes that purchased an Android tablet.

I tested with a Surface RT, and this works pretty good. Makes it possible to use the tablet like a laptop, IMHO. The pull out mouse tray also means I can use a mouse with my laptop or maybe eventually with a Surface.

If I get a Surface, it will be a development device. I don't really care to develop for more than an hour or so with a laptop, so it will be used most of "docked" on my desktop, but with that tray, I can do the odd bit of development with the Surface in my lap.

I'm still not sold that the Surface is the Win8 device I'll get, though.

Edit: The damn thing doesn't come with a mouse pad. Grrr...

The lap desk I linked to is very small and light weight. It fits into the same bag as your laptop when travelling, and can be used anywhere you'd be able to use a laptop.

It's not quite as portable as the Surface, though. I still think it will work nicely, but there is a bit of compromise here.

Was that ever going to be the case with a screen that small? Development machines tend to go big, with multiple monitors and big CPUs for compilation. I find the whole concept that someone might want to develop code on a screen the size of your outstretched hand utterly baffling. You'll have massive neck and eye-strain if you try.

The same can be said for laptops, yet that's done all the time in the real world. Typically, it means docking the device in order to get full sized keyboards, mice, large/multiple monitors, etc. That will work fine with the Surface Pro.

Am I the only one who notices that once computing is truly portable, we get a raft of folks who are now complaining that it's too portable?

It seems like all the technology companies should have just concentrated inventing a desk that will follow you around...

How could you possibly make such a statement without having spent a day coding on one of these? I mean the nerve of some people having an opinion based purely on the hypothetical. Might I suggest you really work on your impartiality.

I have a jailbroken Surface RT which I use to run Powershell and Burp Professional. I also have a jailbroken iPad with SSH. It's a PITA to use compared with Visual Studio on a desktop. I'll admit I don't run VS on the Surface RT or have a Surface Pro, but it's the size of the screen that hurts when developing long before disk space or anything else gets into the equation.
