newbie xbox questions

i got joby and james that xbox / kinect bundle (199)
plus the new lego LOTR and the starter kit for those xbox ...toys with a portal thing

I hear it is better than wii - (i cant open it) higher res... faster

Jono asked if it played dvds..

so..... Newbie Questions:

- if you put a dvd movie into it - will it play like a dvd?

- if you put a cd into it - will it play like a cd player?

- if you put a cd into it with 40 mp3s on it - what does it do?

- same for dvd with avi or mp4

- can it see your network?

- do you need to you use homegroup?

thanks for any help.  always just play quakelive - and before that pc games (doom / quake lol)

* i am planning on sending the best replies/info to jono (their dad) so he knows its better than the wii he has all hooked up

it will play dvds and cds. it will play avi or mp4 from the network (you must share the folders where you have the files via media player or zune) or from an attached usb storage device. There is no need for homegroup.

I've never tried putting a cd with mp3 in it, but I believe it should work.

but i need all the "un-authorized usage" questions answered

there is nothing on netflix in canada... on the wii anyway  (i have one of those)

now joby is almost 10 .... so i got xbox.... but i find .. almost NO kid content... one sega hedgehog game...but mario (his current thing - apart from lego) isnt on it

im hoping that portal - 3 character thing is a hit... and that lego lotr looks better on xbox than on wii

and also - kinect.... is that just a gimmick/fad?  there were like 12 things for it at EB Games

all pretty lame

Someone should bring out a slim line version of things - cheap - ie;  

Kinect Bowling  4.99

Kinect Archery  5.99

etc

if you have access to gamespot.com, you can read reviews about what games are good for you. And you can ask people in the forum too.

i have no idea what gamespot.com has to do with an xbox

TOP LEVEL - you are describing an xbox to a martian  why is it good!   lol

edit:  answer- its just the same as WII with different games that look better with more power.  but i knew that part

I don't know what "all that" is, but it plays pretty much all the avis you can find on torrent these days, all mp4 and there is even a way to play mkv with a source transcoding (but it is a bit more complex to set up).

its sort of a fun exercise -  for anyone so used to it... why is it good - apart from games?  what else does it do? is it good because________ or because_________

or is it just another wii

It's a better solution to a smart tv. Apps that actually get updated and don't suck. If you don't care about internet content, then there's really no other point to owning an Xbox, other than if you just want a "play to" device to be able to listen to your PC music in your living room.

technically Wii comes after Xbox360. Thus, Wii is just another Xbox360, not the other way around.

hmmmm..... You are indeed Martian because you would get pulverized in Gamespot. As for no brainer info, Xbox360 has way more 3rd party games, especially first person shooters (Doom style). Also the controller is built for shooter and racing using its trigger like or paddle like design. And of course, Xbox is the innovator of console online play (console online play done right) which most shooter fan prefers over other platform.

And as for no brainer gaming tip. Look for the games you like. Hence go to Gamespot.com and look for games. All those talk is useless if you prefer Mario Cart over Forza Simulation.
