When she calls me tomorrow demanding an explanation for, why the 700 USD phone i adviced her buy two month ago, allready is obsolete and most likely wont see any more new apps.

Whenever my sister asks me a stupid question, I say ; "go find the box the item came in...".
-
Technology buying decisions are always a crap shoot. There isn't any way around it. The good news is if she did pay retail for the phone and didn't use an upgrade, then there's a chance she'll be eligible for an upgrade sooner.
-
The unfortunate side effect of buying any hardware technology - it will be replaced by something better in the future.
-
Quick, disable her internet.
-
You tell her that tech moves ahead. Can you load iOS 5 on your first-gen iPhone?
-
@fabian: That it's not really obsolete? It will still do everything it's supposed to. There's at least one more update to come. And that technology always goes out of date almost as soon as you've bought it. If you always wait for something that won't become obsolete you'd never buy anything.
-
@spivonious: Oh, I don't know first-gen iPhone has just been released 2 months ago.
As a side note, Lumia 900 just officially come to Hong Kong yesterday. I bet it's nice to know it'll be obsolute in about half year. Can I say Nokia is screwed?

ELOP IS A JERK (I DONT CARE IF THIS GETS ME BANNED) I REPEAT JERK.

Maybe you can tell her that perhaps you shouldn't have seen this coming two months ago, but you sure could've known that it was going to be a possibility.

It's still a good phone, it's not going to stop being good just because something better came along -- there is a difference between 'good' and 'best', but good is still good.

There are at least 2 new updates already announced and in the pipeline

Let me guys take that, even though i'm not an MS developer.
The problem is these phones are not gonna get NEW apps.
-
@fanbaby: ... and ... ?
Ok, maybe it's because I'm getting older, but I'm able to deal with the idea that what I use isn't the latest, or the newest. There are 100,000 existing apps to choose from, and frankly as a user that's plenty. As a developer I can see the opportunity to make apps with better features, but as a user I'm not really that bothered because I don't feel I have to keep on the treadmill of newness.
If you are obsessed with getting the latest, you're going to end up buying a new phone every 6 months anyway. Relax. It's fine.

Impressed! I'm 51 and I'm still not old enough to do that

@Ian2: Being too tired and having no spare money helps to get this attitude.

@fabian: Tell her that her existing phone won't actually stop working.
