I've been down the route of stand alone boxes (WDLive) + Synology Server + Xbox and Laptop to PS3 DLNA Streaming and when it was all said and done... nothing beats the experience of having a full blown dedicated PC running Windows with a decent video card + Steam. So much power to do whatever you want... it costs a little more up front but pays for itself in cheap Steam games + no Gold membership to pay for every month. Throw in an Xbox 360 controller + PC adapter and HippoRemote iPhone/iPad app for Wake on Lan (not to mention a great control surface) and set your prefs to display LARGE. I use an ATI middle range card and it handles everything... pipes audio over HDMI. Noise isn't a problem with a 20 foot HDMI cable. I just tuck the old tower in the other room and run the HDMI under the floorboards... control is over WIFI anyway.
