For love of god, please go test a phpBB forum! This "thing" you call "C9 forum" is NO WAY CLOSE to being a forum. It's slow. It's buggy. It doesn't have normal usual forum functionalities. It's too much "AJAX" and trying to be too cool. It's a piece of
junk and frankly, if I was to write such a "forum" at work, I would be fired pretty quickly.
I'll be keeping to TechOff just for quick tech questions. I seriously can't stand this anymore.
That's my two cents.

Hey buddy, Are you some kind of moron? I never said that C9 is unsecure. Re-read my post again please.SlackmasterK said: -

But, your alternative has a history of being insecure. The C9 team does not need to "test" it.
Maybe they like .net...have you ever thought of that? They've already tested Community Server for the past three C9 versions and ran into problems. Sure, it worked, but as I recall it was hectic whenever they wanted to introduce a new feature. They decided that if they built it from scratch, it'd be easier for them to maintain.
The errors and performance issues...they're working on fixing them. They already restored quoting and fixed the major perf issues.
Just relax and calm down. -

There you go too again about security. I'M TALKING ABOUT THE FUNCTIONS.
A developer ALWAYS need to "test" other software related to what he|she is building. It is pretty arrogant to say that just because they work at Microsoft, they need not to see other forums. There is always room for improvement, there is always room for learning.
Critique is good. and a lot of good people hang around here so why not try to have an "even better" forum!
ps. I AM calm. You guys assume people are always angry. Weird. You actually think I'm upset about some broken forum? I'm just telling them to learn to see other forums like phpBB, vBulletin and learn from it. -

No, you're talking about performance as that's all you seem to be complaining about.
What functions does phpBB have that this forum doesn't? I frequent another forum that uses phpBB. The only thing I can tell that C9 doesn't have is the ability to change text formatting for posts to create something ugly (which fortunately, we don't have).
Or maybe you're main concern is the implementation of the functions (Go to last page instead of goto page x).turrican said:ps. I AM calm. You guys assume people are always angry
If you're calm, you can stop posting in all caps (as well as stop posting your complaints so frequently).turrican said:I'm just telling them to learn to see other forums like phpBB, vBulletin and learn from it.
Do you honestly think they haven't already used them? Maybe they're going for something better? Last time I checked, phpBB doesn't have tagging or friendly urls. AFAIK, the forums here are actually based on tagging such that each post is associated with a thread based on its tags. It's a fresh way of tackling forums, abandoning the old categorization of threads for something more Web 2.0ish (assuming, this is what they're doing and I'm not just making it up...Erik where art thou?). -
well I do have to say this: I am not here for the software, I come here to post and read posts by other 9ers.mVPstar said:turrican said:*snip*

I hope they get the problems fixed.
I have been here for a while, I do think some issues in this new software suck.
I guess as this is supposed to be the same codebase as some other sites I should look and see if they have the same problems. -

- How about "Spoiler" tags?
- Where are these tags you are talking about btw? I don't see them!
... - How about auto emailing the replies?
- How about internal messaging between users?
- How about votes?
- How about themes?
- How about ability to choose to see or not to see what stuff like avatars, signatures etc?
- How about ignore function?
- How about subscribing/bookmarking threads?
- How about friends list?
- How about group memberships?
- How about event reminders?
- How about calendars?
- How about a real advanced search and not just a text box?
And that is only the basic stuff.

- How about votes? *See here
- How about themes? *Why?
- How about ability to choose to see or not to see what stuff like avatars, signatures etc? *We don't have signatures, and is there really any point to not displaying an avatar if the post is still the same size?
- How about ignore function? *See here
- How about subscribing/bookmarking threads? *Subscribing is really only useful with whatever method is used for tracking replies
- How about friends list? *We're all friends...rather pointless
- How about group memberships? *Why? What groups?
- How about event reminders? *What events happen on C9
- How about calendars? *For what?/Why?
- How about a real advanced search and not just a text box? *Search is, at least, there. Post a thread asking for the advanced features...
Half of those features are ones that are already being attended to (and that, frankly, you're late in the game for pointing them out). The other half are really not that necessary. Just because other forums have the feature doesn't necessarily mean it has a place here.
It also doesn't mean that they're sensible in the first place. Take "friends list" for example. The users who I want to talk to frequently are in my MSN contacts. Why would I want a list of my friends on a forum if I already have one in MSN? Redundant. Granted I can see the social networking implications here...but for cripes sake, we're talking about forums. For a forum to work, it doesn't absolutely need such a feature.
turrican said:...Give me a break.
For the features you listed that the C9 team hasn't already made plans to improve on/include in the near future, the phpBB forum I frequent also doesn't have them and the company team has no intentions of including them. For obvious reasons too...they don't really add anything. And I certainly don't wish the forum had them.
If it's so frustrating for you to use the C9 forums, perhaps you are here way too frequently and it might be time to take a break. -
"You don't need that feature anyhow since I'm not using it myself" ...good thinking.mVPstar said:turrican said:*snip*

...Give me a break.mmm okay, you do have some points... There are some things I'd like to see on C9v4 someday:
- Signatures
- Auto-email replies
- User-added polls
- Ignore function (Would this affect threads, replies, or both? Let's get checkboxes for that)
And yes, you're getting angry. Calm people (At least educated calm people) don't sprinkle caps and bold tags throughout their entry; they understand that if someone's going to read their post, it will be conveyed either way. All caps and bold tends to make your text more difficult to read; but props for using a bulleted list instead of a very long paragraph.
I'd also like to press enter in the editor and get one linebreak instead of two... Having to press shift-enter is somewhat annoying... But Word does that too sometimes
[Edit re: mVPstar]: As these points are addressed, just consider them "feature votes"

You do realize you're falling back into the exact same pattern of behavior that has gotten you banned twice already? One would think you'd learn, especially when the C9 team keeps giving you second chances.turrican said:

You've been being abusive and you know it. Stop now, and people will continue taking you seriously, instead of assuming you're an angry, uneducated idiot.

"I use them so they must be useful."
And now we're back to square one. Despite the fact that you merely picked out one thought from my post and ignored the actual meaning, I'll state it plain and simple: a forum does not need all those features for it to work as a forum. Sure, you could request it, but for saying the C9 forum is faulty because it does not have feature x doesn't make sense.
Cue bold-face-all-caps come back in 5..4..3... -
The other big difference between C9 and phpBB is that phpBB is a forum engine and C9 is not.
Forums are a part of what we do, sure but it's not all we do. In fact, it's not even most of what we do.
Some of those features are things we've had on lists around the office but making the best forum software with every bell and whistle out there isn't our goal and it probably never will be. We'll make improvements to what we have now for sure but the forums aren't the point of the site and they probably never will be.
Starter entries (the first post in a thread) are tagged with their forum. All other posts have a parent (the post they are in reply to) and a starter (the thread they are in). We've been rethinking the idea of a "primary tag" as a container though and may go with a more distinct "container" concept since the primary tag idea causes strangeness in some places. -
