When clicking on the image, which is 404'd, the loading progressbar never times out and goes away, and there is no button or other way to cancel it; the whole page must be refreshed.

Are you talking about the lil gray progress bar in the middle of the page? It's working for me now but that's what this sounds like...
You should be able to get rid of it by hitting the esc key or clicking on the page or the bar itself. Some text along those lines near the bar might help
