Is it possible to use a digital signature to sign in Windows XP/2000?

Theoretically, you just need to develop your own authentication module for Windows and configure your network to use that instead.

Perhaps you'd better clarify what you mean. Where do you think the digital signature would be kept and how would you prove you were the person authorised to use that signature?
I seem to remember that digital signatures are involved if you use SmartCard authentication with Windows. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del, put your SmartCard in the reader and type the password. Password is authenticated by the SmartCard which then tells Windows your identity. Something like that. Microsoft used it at TechEd in 1999 or 2000 in conjunction with Seimens who provided all the PCs and SmartCard readers.
