My login operation has been slowing down on my laptop xp sp2. Given all the disk crunching going on, I took a peek by starting filemon while the notification area icons etc were still being loaded up.
What I found was weird to say the least, why is explorer.exe scanning through various programs and shortcut files during startup? It seems to go to some random looking offset, read a bit and then set the file information to look as if no one had read the file. Explorer.exe
acts like it was scanning these programs for something? Has my explorer turned into a virus scanner or what? I do not have any programs installed that should cause this behaviour that I know of.
This is just one of the program "scans" that slow down my login noticeably.

I suppose explorer is populating the start menu?
-
Seems pretty likely that its caching the icons - same goes for the desktop too.
-
I guess I'll try removing all the programs from start menu then to see if there's any difference.
-
Stop those in services ....and set as manual startup.
