Hi Guys,
First post to Channel 9. Very informative site this is.
I have installed Vista Beta 2 (ultimate) and have been very impressed by the amount of new things in this OS. I especially like the new advanced settings in the firewall.
A few issues I hope you guys can help me out with:
1) I can't access some files - i get an 'access denied' even though I am in the ACL as full access. For example, the pfirewall.log file... I added myself as full control and still notepad gives me 'access denied' trying to read it. (Yes I logged out and
back in and even rebooted - same problem). I think this is just a misunderstanding on my part how security works in Vista.
2) IE 7 is having some troubles with certain sites that use Java that IE7 in XP works fine with.
3) IE 7 is now completely hosed - it starts up (the interface is present), but before the 'about:blank' shows up in the address bar, it just locks up (IE becomes unresponsive). So I can't surf the web anymore and download anything... Is there a way to reset
IE7's installation so I don't have to completely reinstall Vista? Any recommendations?
4) Vista memory consumption is *way* to high - it is consuming around 600MB of memory with no applications running. This needs to come down DRASTICALLY. Is the consumption so high simply because this is a beta? Please say it is so.
So far I love Vista... hard to go back to XP.

I guess this won't change that much in the RTM. The RAM usage comes with the introduction of the 3D composition engine (Glass etc). There is also a lot services running in the background... -

Let's not forget superfetch. That uses a lot of memory while still making your PC faster.
I've found Vista will use more memory if you have more memory. It's highly adaptive to the current situation, so even if you're seeing high task manager figures, performance doesn't need to suffer. -
for fixing IE, i find going to Internet Options in Control Panel, go to advanced settings, and then Reset Internet Explorer Settings. That fixed my issue, which sounds just like yours.

I had this same problem: [Link]
At least now I know I'm not the only one...
