The Sony has 20 zoom the Hitachi has 10
The Sony does VOB the Hitachi does MPG
The Sony can go directly to a TV
The Hitachi needs external software to do that.
The Hitachi does a seperate file for each video clip
The Sony can do that, if you change the date between clips.
The Hitachi connects directly to the Computer (USB port)
The Sony you take out the Mini DVD and put that in the computer.
(Very seldom do I need to open the DVD drive on the Hitachi)
Which one would you choose? If you ignored the zoom difference.

I guess I'm not so smart.
Changing the Year on the Sony didn't result in a seperate file
for each video clip. Somehow I ended up with just 3 large files.
Now I need to get a VOB splitter that will break up these into
2 minute clips so I can post them on dropshots.com

That's why I have the Digital8 Sony Handicam.
I hate the entire dvd and mini dvd process.
My Handicam still records in Digital (and Dolby 5.1 Surround), records directly as AVI.
Firewire to my PC to get the video's off the cam.
And the Digital8 Tapes hold 1 hour of Digital Video. -

Sounds like the Digital8 is better than the DVD HandyCam.
I hate the Sony. Putting all the clips in 1 file. For the user
to split out. And no software provided to do it.

Yeah, don't use the Sony Software either, it is bad.
I use Pinnacle Studio for editing and I have to admit it is fantastic.

I use miniDV via firewire, really don't like the idea of optical media in a cam, though mine does tend to get shaken around a fair bit and I can't see the DVD surviving that.
As regards the VOB files, side effect of using the DVD standard if you want it to play in any DVD player. If it chapters it, have a look at SmartRipper.
