Hello I am new the Mircosoft stuff and am learning programming after about 10 years out of IT.
I am learning VB which is ok.
But my questiion is "what languages are like what ?"
What I mean by this is VB seems to be like "putting together boxes ?" its blocky but ok. Like building "Lego?"
C# looks a little more linguistic, I haven't lookeed into it yet. A purists language.
I actually liked writting HTML years ago, it had a nice feel to it. Like knitting ?
And I'm looking at Python, it look really good, fun.
Any other suggestion on what languages are like what ?

VB is just an alternative front-end syntax for MSIL, same with C#. Personally I prefer C# because the syntax is more keyboard-friendly and offers more language features.
Many people describe a language based on their experiences with the IDE, it's an unfair comparison. By that comparison, you can argue VB is a better language than the EMCAScript-compliant ActionScript because AS's IDE in "Normal mode" has you drag and drop language keywords and functions onto the code-editing window, it doesn't let you actually type stuff out unless you switch to "Expert mode".

Like knitting? HTML is just an SGML derivative that states what the contents of a hypertext document mean. To me it's more like carving your own printing-press, 1700s style.

I like the sound of the printing press
Thanks for that. -

I like the look of C#. I find VB a bit blocky at times and the auto - completion too much, but its good to get started.

That sounds mental ! Hard to make mistakes : hard to write code.
Yeah, but VB is still blocky, I remember working for a Microsoft Solution provider using VB and I remember, even without the .completion , it was still very, wordy. C# looks nice. But as I'm getting back into programming, its a good place to start. Next stop C#.

And that's good, You have to know where you come from. ""Arrogance manifests if you don't remember the past"" Arrogance doesn't need the past. The past is made of people and peoples thoughts.
A computer runs on electricty.
That's natzie ideology your piping.
"is just a" is a MASSIVE assumption. "It's just a computer". Standing on the shoulders of others and all that.
In the politest possible way, you can come across a bit arrogant at times.

It's not true that C# has more language features than VB.NET, it just has other features.
You know, VB.NET has quite a few features that are missing in C#, so it all equals out at the end...
You shouldn't worry too much about which language to use, if you started with vb.net just continue with it, it's a great language for rapid development of business apps and asp.net websites. -
If programming languages arn't your thing, you could also develop software without them or complex block diagrams.
I guess that sounds kind of strange though--doesn't it?

No, No, i used to do that. I think designing a solution to a "programming" problem is better than programming itself.
I think the old waterfall model is a good way because you concentrate on design.
People become too expert in lanaguges and often forget about design.
I think thats how languages were developed, to reflect peoples thinking in design, and not the other way around.
But people buy languages "/technology" and not design.
I hate that word, new "technologies"
All the concepts that are displayed on channel 9 seem to be displayed on Whitle Board, which is what your saying, It's the idea and not the program thats important.
I guess I just got sucked into the langauge "fight" and forgot about the design , which is much much interesting.
Its the code people that do that to ya.
I've got a stoy about that.

interesting.
I like C# and it look like an editorial article in newspaper.
because, codes are easy to understand objects and way-of-running.
it's quite logical in case of the works of delegate and expression of generics.
HTML is like a cookie baking.
it looks quite different in many browser, a viewer, even a code is same. And it needs very very misc touches for making beautiful outputs.
C++ is like a spaghetti.
just looks complex, but tastes good and harmonious working.
just enjoy.

What do you think of VB ?
C# looks nice, very professional.
I remember HTML on different browers and how the layout would totally change. If it was Netscpae or Internet Explorer.
Was there a thing called "chaining" in computing. Was is to do with booting up ?
ASP was a bit weird. Like "Strange Wiring"
C++ was always too much for me. Some people seemed to love it.
I liked basic, just basic. Like C++ you had to see the flow of the program, there were no events, per say.
Ta.

I agree with your opinion about ASP (I mean 3.0).
I worked ASP3.0 for 4 years.
anyway,
I think VB is like um...
It's like a Microwave Cook.
It's quick, all-way-working without thinking of what OLE is not working on or what bug will be out.
Any gradients, kind of soup is familiar with novices and even results are very professional. (I might think VB6.0 than .NET. VB.NET is complicated in case of many handlings)
Cheers. -
Visual Basic - Big Deli Sandwiches. / Microwave Cooking too.
C# - French Cooking, not to be messed with. Head Chef stuff.
ASP - Toxic.
HTML - Setting the Table.
Java - a whole other kitchen, that you know looks ok.
C++ Custard Pie ??
Python - *Building you own oven* and making a cake
***
Access - ?
SQL - Lots of sandwiches.
COBOL - Aga Oven Cooking. <Best>
ADO - Pushing food around the table and not eating it.
.NET ? A net that feels a little uncomfotable at times.
Mircosoft - For me, I would have to say that it seems a little inedable at times
<Sorry>.
J# ? Good, a different cuisine . Raisins etc ?
Hope that is ok.

After all those cooking analogies I feel obliged to link to this. And yes, you have to program by the book too.
