Remote Desktop and Vista Home Premium

I've been using Vista Home Premium and just realized that Remote Desktop isn't part of the OS. Is there a way to enable it?

The real question would be are you trying to connect to a different machine, or are you trying to connect to the machine with Windows Home?  Windows Home versions have never allowed you to connect via Remote Desktop.  This is a feature, of professional, business, server versions of windows.  If you just need the client I believe you can download it, or it's already installed under accessories -> Communication.

Trying to connect to the machine that has Windows Home. Remote Desktop was part of XP. This makes Home Premium a real downgrade.

Only XP Professional and Media Center.  It was never a part of XP Home Edition.

What makes it look like a downgrade is that, Vista Home Premium worths near WinXP Pro., not WinXP Home. (In HK, I think the price difference of retail boxes is not more than US$20. If it's OEM version I think the price difference will be even smaller)

Can you name any "User Feature" that exist in Vista Home Premium but not in WinXP Pro.? (I.e.: Any movie that can't play unless you upgrade to Vista? Any popular games that won't be able to play unless you upgrade to Vista? Any Office applications that won't run unless you upgrade to Vista? Any important thing that I can't do unless upgrade to Vista?) At roughly the same price, when deciding which OS to buy, those are the questions that'd be asked by the end-users.

Now seems a few answers to the questions are in favor of decision of buying WinXP Pro.

Media Center and Tablet support do not exist in XP Pro. And all the low level Vista features, but those are not "User features"...

Agreed "Media Center" counts, but how many user need Tablet support on their Desktop machine?

Then again, is there any movie that can be played in Media Center but not in WMP? And how many user also bought  the remote control? And afterall, wireless keyboard and mouse are quite common today, they may serve that purpose good enough......

Sure they do, but Wacom also come with driver for Windows XP.

And do you think we average users own Wacom boards?

All Wacom tablet devices are USB HID devices and don't require Wacom's own drivers to operate, it's only when you require the special functionality (like pressure 'n' stuff) where you need Wacom's driver.

Even so, Wacom's driver is just a driver, it doesn't add TabletPC XP's nice input panel and other Tablet-friendly features.

Home version do not support Remote Desktop. You can use Gooer Remote Desktop Service, I am using it on my Vista Home Premium and it works fine. 

The only way to remote into XP Home (without installing a remote server) is through a remote assistance request.

Basically someone sitting at the XP home machine sends you a request via email or MSN messenger and then they can give you control of the machine and then you can connect to it with Remote Desktop.

You can also try Real VNC (http://www.realvnc.com/">http://www.realvnc.com) or Gooer as suggested above.

LogMeIn Free is IMHO just superb. Just need to register and install on the client. Thereafter just download a browser plug-in to access the remote. After that its a free trial to remote to someone else and totally free to remote home to one's own PC.

Well I upgraded to Windows Vista Ultimate. I have remote desktop now.

I am able to remote desktop to my machine. But then after authentication, the connection is dropped.

Maybe the firewall is blocking me. What ports does Vista's remote desktop use?

Port 3389, same as in WinXP Pro.

EDIT: Seems not a port problem because you did mentioned you can connect. What version of RDP client you're using? Is that the one in WinXP? I remember that you'll have to either upgrade the RDP client in WinXP or enable the use of older RDP protocol in Vista in order to use a WinXP machine to remote into Vista.

Actually I think it was my wife. I was at work remoting home. My wife was using Pandora on my computer while doing homework on hers. When I Remoted in, the music cut out. So she logged back in.

I tried 3 times and gave up. She won.

I forgot Vista is more like XP. Two people apparently can't be actively logged in at the same time.

When does Windows 2008 Server come out?
