Vista => XP Networking woes

Well, I am quite certain that alot of people have posted about problems with getting Vista and XP to connect.  I've done a bit of searching, and so far the same thing is the same.  However, it doesn't seem to work for me at all, and also to note, it's usually Vista can see and access XP, but XP cannot see and access Vista, am I right?

Well, for me, it's quite the reverse.  You see, XP can see and access Vista just fine, but however, as much as I tried (I even enabled netBIOS in the WINS tab) nothing seems to work in the reverse.

Hopefully this linked PDF diagram will make (at least somewhat) clear what my problem is.

So far I've tried:

• Enabling netbios on XP AND Vista
• running the Network Setup Wizard on XP (several times I might add)
  
• disabling Password Protection for my network

some idea's:

Disable "use simple network sharing" in the folder properties of Windows Explorer of XP.

Set the XP firewall to pass through file and printer sharing.

Putting the standard possibilities(like NetBIOS misconfiguration) aside... could it be that you accidentially put your Vista machine in DMZ? :O

Simple file sharing is the only file sharing option that is supported in XP home,  so you just need to enable file sharing correctly. There is no file sharing with user/group permission in XP home.

I also suspect most likely there is firewall blocking on XP, check and disable all the firewalls on XP, it can be Windows firewall, antivirus firewall, ZoneAlarm, etc. If no firewall blocking, you should be able to ping XP from Vista.

Also you can access the XP directly from Vista by opening a file browser, and then type following command:

\\type-your-XP-IP-address

So far I haven't got any issues accessing XP/Vista on either way.

The only modifications being (for completely unrelated connectivity issues) that netbios is disabled on both computers, and that simple file sharing is disabled too.

Oh well on Vista you can't access your HD from the network as \\MyPD\c$ or d$ and so on.  So set a shared folder and you are ready to go.

okay, well this is what I did to correct the problem:

In Windows XP:

I went into my Firewall settings, UNCHECK "Do not allow exceptions."

Then I went to the "Exceptions" tab.

I made sure that all of the programs that I trust (Messenger, Firefox, IRC, etc.) was the only ones checked, and I checked "File and Printer*" sharing.  (More than likely it's turned on)

It seems to be turned on either by default, or a computer professional turned it on.  IMHO For the most part you would want to keep "Do not allow exceptions" ("Block incoming connections" in Vista) unchecked so then other devices on your network can access them.
