I have had a similar problem and found the issue is not with my contacts but with my calendar.  It seems to get duplicate entries and will not sync.  As a side note I sync to two computers.

When I cannot sync with the error "cannot sync to the desktop" I remove my calendar from the list of items to sync, let it finish the process, go back in and put the check mark in front of calendar, let it sync and everything is fine.

Alright I am having the same issue as the rest of you but my problem is this. I have a windows mobile 5.0 device with messaging and security pack, well according to microsoft it makes a big difference if you have these features so i figured hey ill just try a different version of my MWDC and still the same error syncing, i tried turning off the usb functionality, i haven't tried using bluetooth but I am starting to think that might be my only option, I have also tried doing soft restarts, and hard resets, i have also rebooted the PC and I have tried WMDC 6.1, and 6.5. Any ideas would be greatly appreciate since I work in automotive i had over 100 different vendors and suppliers in my phone that i would much like to have back!
