IE8 Freezes Winforms program

We have a large winforms program. On one computer if you are running the program and open IE8 the winforms program freezes and doesn't come back. But if you already have IE8 running when you start the winforms program everything appears to be fine.

The same thing happens regardless of how you start IE8 (normal, no addins, or 64 bit).

My dev box has the same os, motherboard, processor, and memory and it runs fine.

This is on Vista Enterprise x64 Q9550 with 8GB ram.

It runs fine with Firefox 3. The weird thing is there are no web browser controls in the app or anything that should make it related to IE.

Sounds like your app is waiting for IE8's reply. But since IE8 wasn't there at the time, you are waiting for empty object's reply. How do you launch IE8? Make sure the launching process doesn't requires any feedback from IE8. And make sure you DON"T do something like new object = funtion return IE8, then use the new object later on. Because that new object may point to null before IE8 pointer is meaningful.

From the look of it, there is a static IE8 function to launch one/more instance of IE8. Then, you will get a pointer back to control that instance of IE8. I didn't read the documentations, but, that's pretty much it should happen.

If you are using commandline to launch IE8, make sure the paramters are correct, but I don't think that will crash your app though.

what that has to do with your issue?

Maybe some form of resource contention between ie8 and my winforms app. Maybe the Intel driver handles it better than the one that ships with Vista.

That's just doesn't make sense LOL. But it is fixed, whatever.....
