This is very idle curiosity: Who comes up with codenames (Longhorn, Whistler, Whidbey), and how do they do it?

I think should be the marketing people right?

I read some time ago in a UK Pc magazine, all the names happen to exist at a ski resort in canada.

You can even go out and eat at a place called Longhorn http://www.whistlerblackcomb.com/nightlife/ -
Yes, all the names are locations. Someone told me once about how with Visual Studio, it has to do with their distance away from Seattle. Everett isn't too far away, Whidbey is quite a bit further away and Oracas a bit further away than Whidbey or something along those lines (I'm no geography expert)

I'm not associated with Microsoft, but my company (based in Alameda, CA) used to codename based on moutain ranges. Must be a popular theme.

Nice. Thanks Mitch. I didn't know it was related to locations. Cool!
Does it mean Microsoft staff always have holidays there?
