I've been noticing a few MSNBots at my site lately, this is much more than I had visiting a while ago, so the answer for the fourth question is probably yes.

I guess this depends on your definition of "beating". Google is an advertising company that doesn't make money with its search engine. I presume Microsoft is a software company that also doesn't make money with its search engine. These are crazy times
we live in.

Tech Off - Microsoft New Search Engine - waiting with breathless anticipation

Obviously, I would hope one day that MSN search engine can be as good as Google if not better. It is my assumption that people want to find the thing without browsing through too many pages of search result.

Google's "I feel lucky" is not exactly that great either. Still needs a lot of improvement, so I don't think MSN is truly on its losing battle against Google.

The name could also be in need of some work.

I rather Google for information than MSN for information.

(Point being that when I talk I use term Google instead of more generic "search" as the verb to point out that one needs to use this particular engine if they are going to find what I am referring to)

Tech Off - Microsoft New Search Engine - waiting with breathless anticipation

Many people I know who spend time on the net and want to search, but don't see the difference in search engines, will just use the first one handed to them. This translates to lots of people I know using Yahoo, simply because one of the first things they
did online was to setup a Yahoo Mail account - when they go to check their email, they are in Yahoo's environment so it's easy to search from there. Considering Microsoft's ability to integrate things tightly.. I'd imagine that the combo of MSN Messenger /
Search / Hotmail and Windows could fulfil a lot of people's online needs a lot of the time - if they use the net primarily for chat, mail and light searching why not do it all from one place? Especially if the OS itself seemingly integrates these : )
