I am looking at subscribing to MSDN for a small company that only has a couple of developers at this point, doing C# development for fat client apps and some web development.  At this point I am really leaning towards the Professional version as the jump to Premium doesn't warrant it from a cost standpoint.  I would appreciate it if anyone would care to pipe in on the benefits of the Premium/Ultimate versions over the Professional that I might be missing.  From a cost standpoint there's a $4k diff between the Professional and Premium versions and I think that $4k can buy an awful lot of tools ad hoc that we might need that Premium might have provided.  I know my question is a bit vague so perhaps you can approach this from the standpoint of what drove you to buy Premium or Ultimate?  Or what benefits surprised you?  I've looked at the matrix on the different versions as well as the full Excel spreadsheet of all the features of each version.  Yes, there are a few items here and there that I like in Premium that Professional doesn't have, but as I said earlier, I can buy those tools and still have $$$ leftover from the $4k price difference.

@a235301: It depends on the product you are building.

The quality, analysis and performance tools are worth the upgrade alone, even for a 1 man shop as they raise the quality of you app, and reduce bugs. I worked somewhere with professional licenses and sorely wish they had just got ultimate, because if you count the number of days you spend chasing bugs or dealing with code that is hard to modify because it was poorly structured, what you save in upfront costs you pay for in wages fixing issues that could and should have been identified earlier.

@vesuvius:  That's the thing; the complexity of the apps we'll likely be developing in the first year will be pretty low.  C# as the UI with a mix of third party SDKs.  A great deal of lego block programming; sticking the bricks together to make a new product.

I will allow that as we grow and the apps become more complicated we'll be looking at Premium or Ultimate but at this point we're not there.  The only thing that gives me cause for concern on the Professional edition is we'll be doing some web programming and I don't know what the Premium or Ultimate versions will be offering us there.

Don't forget that you need a subscription for each programmer.

@a235301: Why don't you start off with the express editions, in Visual Studio 2012 there is a express version of TFS, a lot of people laugh at them but they are quite powerful and are an excellent way to evaluate you Visual Studio requirements

@a235301: I agree with Vesuvius. The express editions have more than enough to get you started, and after doing a project or two, you'll have a much better understanding if certain features will help.

We're an enterprise IT department and we went with the Pro version. Premium looked nice, but we just wouldn't use the extra features enough to warrant the much higher cost.
