why do monitors max out at 1920 x 1080 pixels?

as monitors get larger, shouldn't they also have more pixels? Why do monitors max out at 1920 x 1080 pixels?

There's a number of monitors using a 2560x1440 or 2560x1600 resolution, but they are rare and expensive. I think commonality with HDTVs makes 1920x1080 more economical to produce.

Like blowdart, my work monitor is 1920x1200 as well, but since it's a $1400 Eizo it doesn't exactly count as "economical".

But do those 2560x1xxx displays use a dvi connector? We have some big Apple Cinema displays but they all use Displayport or something. Maybe it's just because graphics cards all have dvi connectors that all monitors are staying at 1920x1xxx.

From wiki, it seems 3840 x 2400 max is supported in single channel DVI adapters, but the refresh rate will be dropped to 17Hz (normal LCD refresh at 60Hz). Even dual channel ones would refresh at 33Hz on that resolution.

I'm just waiting for Apple to realize that people would really shell out for a retina display desktop monitor.

My graphics card (Radeon HD6850) has two DisplayPort connectors in addition to dual channel and single channel DVI connectors.
