Coffeehouse - Any experience with remoting?

Minh wrote:

Remoting is a pain in the a&& to work with.

Not only do you go through all the config headaches, you have to distribute your server-side DLL onto the client (to serve as a "proxy") so you don't even get instant update like a web app.

Use WCF -- I hear it's just much better.

Or just build a Web service.

Stay away from Remoting It's a dead-end technology.

You don't need to put your server .dlls on the client at all. If you have a good solution which all objects in a shared assembly that will be sent by value over the remoting link then you are fine. If you do ByRef method calls or object manipulation then
keep your interfaces in the shared assembly as well.

I have used remoting as the core communication for a very large .net project and it works really well. I am however looking at upgrading the whole lot to WCF for some of the more advanced features they have introduced.

Coffeehouse - Problem with Vista beta 2 Product key request

I am really not happy!

I spent a while last night setting everything up downloading Vista, longhorn and office beta 2.

Got a nice new top of the range laptop to run vista as its primary OS.

Then i come into work this morning all ready to burn the DVDs and install....i go to request the product keys and the MSDN site keeps saying "Application Error" whenever i try to get any Vista Keys (however i did manage to get the Longhorn Server keys)!

guess i have to wait a while longer until they fix the issue!

That it has an exipiration date of 5/31/07...my question if Microsoft was planning on shipping on sometime Jan 07 what is Jun 07 even needed

I would not read too much into the expire date. From my experiance they tend to set very far in the future dates. I am sure there were quite a few builds of VS 2005 & SQL 2005 that expired a long while after the expected delivery date.

WinHEC runs today until Thursday.
I know the betas are not in the registration goody bag like they were last time. But apparently that is because the CDs are not ready.

So you're saying that if Y attacks X and then you attack Y, you are not at all defending X? No, of course, you were just pointing out an incorrect definition of "subscription" by offering a completely spurious example of your own.

Being able to read on a word basis and actually reading are not the same thing. Your post is of course flawed again, as most of yours are.

1 - I did not attack anyone.
2 - I also did not say my example was the definition. Just an example, showing the previous definition was incorrect.

you cant make the sort of assumption that 'everyone should know'. Everyone should know that requesting ring tones by SMS sign you up for a subscription service. But they dont. So reglations state that it has to be spelled out to people in a large amount
of detail. And as you seem to have issues in understanding...i will say again....i am not saying that this is something napster does not do....just that any service like it must do it.

My point was not that a subscription means you should have access forever....just that it does not mean that you have to give everything back after the subscription ends.

I cant say i have ever used napster, so i dont know how obvious it is that when you end the subscription you lose access to content, but for the common user it needs to be very obvious and if its not then it could be viewed has mis-marketing their service.

And the problem is they do market to non tech users. People are ignorant of copywrite law all the time. The way most people see it is you can record off TV and rewatch.
